Have a chance to buy a 1953 triumph. Don't know the model (no ownership). Needs a primary/chain cover, exhaust, headlight parts,and tires. Head was rebuilt 15 years ago but hasnt run since but was stored. I know this isnt much info but has how hard is it to get parts, etc ?

I would go for it. There are several companies out there that specialize in parts for vintage Triumphs.

You might check these guys out. I've only ordered minor stuff, but they list parts back to 1950. You can post a "request for parts" on their homepage. My understanding is they bought up a lot of Triumph Dealer parts inventory back when the company suffered financial indigestion

Sure makes you wonder how many of our bikes will be around in 55 years time...

I know many places to get parts. Some things to consider is #1 it should have an iron head on it, if it has the per-unit aluminum head on it they tend to crack between the valve seats and head bolts, it is possible to put a 9 bolt head on from the 60s.

#2 Primary cases in decent condition for those are hard to come by.

#3 If you want original headlight parts, those are also very hard to come by but recently they have started making repop fiberglass versions.

Mechanical parts are easy to get and others can be had but you will PAY for them and are not readily availble. I have a connection for magnito and generator parts too, those are also hard to find. 53 should have the mag and generator not an alternator.

If it's a 53 it'll be easier to get bits for than it is for my '45....

Gina, here in the US the 50's bikes are the bikes people chopped in the 60s and the sheet metal in many cases got tossed in the junk heap making it hard to find good original stuff. I still want better stuff for my 54 T-110, bought it with a long front end from the early 60s, peanut tank,wrong seat,wrong fenders, and wrong lights. I have found much of it but some is rough. Lucky the frame was never altered. The bike has matching numbers and I have rebuilt the engine and trans as well as sand blasted and redone the frame. I have a pre-unit rear wheel but not the right one. The one I need has a key to stop the breaks from spinning not a bar. The key locates with a slot in the frame. The front and rear wheels are 54 only along with many of the parts. Most have only subtle differences like the only difference the front wheel has is there is a small raised spot where each spoke attaches the rest of the years don't have that but look the same other wise, well the rest that have the bolt on drum anyway. Like my 58 front is the same except for that. The speedo is odd too and so on. He is lucky in the respect that the 53 at least has a larger year range for parts.

Yeah but my bike I only now know of two others in this country. In an almost original state. I've seen a 3HW engine in a racer, but I don't count that.
And here a lot of people altered their bikes. Not always chopped, but me dad always talks abouts sticking different engines from other bikes...

Oh I know Gina, I wasn't belittling your search just explaining why those "53" parts are hard to come by here. I have never seen one like yours outside of a museum. Lucky, I would love to have a bike like that.

Ive bought the bike. its a 1953 triumph tiger. vin no 584736t. Does anybody know if this is right?
I can get a primary cover for it. I learned restoration lesson #1 from britishonly.com.

British Only is my last resort I can't stand those people. They are over priced and a pain to deal with but they almost always have what you need if you can't find it anywhere else.

keep it local and try Waldridge motors in Lucan(just north of London,ON)They were a great help with my 69 triumph.
Great people to deal with and very fast shipping.

Two parts and advice sources, both in the EST / DST time zone.
Both have a vast knowledge of old Triumphs and are willing to share that knowledge.
