in Sandusky for the pony express handoff
Suzie and Robert put on there helmets I thought its only two hours what do I need helmet for (idiot). First leg get nailed by the worlds largest bug dead center of my forehead. Second leg it storms on us,for the record rain hurts at 70 mph. Meet Storm(Nancy) Head home rain again more pain at 70 then have a truck kick up a rock nice bruise right on my cheek. This isnt a choice thread I made one and was stupid. This is a time I will say I will never ride the slab again with out one again Thankyou thankyou very much

Most of the people I ride with think I wear a helmet cuz I'm afraid I'll crash. It's really more for the reasons you describe. And for warmth during the early and late parts of the riding season.

Local law leaves a lot up to the discretion of the rider including helmet use, which was one of the factors in deciding to move here. Now, statistics show that use or not use of a helmet comes out pretty close as far as overall safety is concerned, with extra factors such as fatigue, reduced field of view and distortion of outside sounds increasing the probability of crashing, tilting the overall score slightly in favor of not using a lid under most circumstances.
OK, I live in an agricultural area. Depending on the season and time of day, there are big bugs that hurt, little bugs that smart like riding in a sand storm and medium bugs that sting and bite. And, don't forget the birds that buzz around eating said bugs.
In the winter, the bugs are hiding out, the birds are gone south, but when I ride bareheaded, my ears wish they had gone south too.

When my friends and I did our trip to Tombstone, I made sure I wore my full face helmet vice skull cap or open face like the rest of the guys. Getting sandblasted in the middle of the desert is something I have no desire for my face to experience. Sure as poop smells, the sand was blowing like crazy when we rode through the sand dunes...didn't fell a thing.

Ahh the joys of helmetless riding...somtimes I miss it but wont go basck to it.

I recall once taking the Mrs out for a ride. I saw the bug fly over my head, and felt her jerk when it impacted on hers.

When we stopped she had a huge red spot in the middle of her forhead. Almost drew blood.

Chris! You friggin' WIMP!!!

Are you gonna let a few itty-bitty little BUGS make you a girly man all of a sudden??? Don't you know wearin' one o' those BRAIN BUCKETS not only impairs your hearing to such an extent that "you can't hear ANYTHING out there while you're ridin' around", that they can attribute to a "BROKEN NECK" if you crash, AND well..."you just don't look AS COOL" nor "as MANLY" ridin' around will one o' those things on your noggin!!! Come on! How in the heck are you going to experience the "feeling of FREEDOM" while you're riding your bike around without all those warm Mid-western summer breezes flowing through those locks o' yours???

Yep! I think you better THINK this whole thing THROUGH AGAIN!!!

AND...I CERTAINLY HOPE that I don't come across some thread around here later where you confess that you're now going to start buckling your friggin' SEAT BEAT while you're driving your car around too, you WIMP!!! I mean, screw the idea that you can be thrown from your car in an accident if you don't buckle up!!! What would happen if your car catches FIRE afterwards and you can't get out of it, HUH?! What THEN???!!!

(BTW...for those new or even old members around here who may not RECOGNIZE SARCASM when they SEE IT...well folks...THAT WAS FRIGGIN' SARCASM RIGHT THERE!!!!!!!!!)

I noticed I have started wearing my full face more these days, but I think that maybe down to my age and getting fed up with the cold, the bugs, the rain etc making me look older than I really am.

That's my excuse and yea i'm sticking to it...

I always felt that it was wind errosion that was causing the decay of my boyish good looks and premature hair loss

I'll have to come up with another reason for my Santa Claus(Father Christmas?)looking beard over exposer to computer monitor radiation maybe?

I did notice on my trip to CT that there was terrible noise with my old 1/2 helmet. The real deal from the 60's. It came with a bike my grandfather bought. It has the leather ear flaps that connect to the chin strap. The wind whipping through there was LOUD! I didn't remember that or even notice it before. And I always thought my hearing loss was from loud pipes, working around machinery, and loud music.

Get a windscreen and the bugs issue pretty much goes away cept maybe the occasional Junebug that might sail in just over the top of the screen like a "sinker" bug.

A good windscreen will keep you bug free. As to the wearing of a helmet. Its all a matter of personal choice.

And thats NOT sarcasm.

I agree with it being a choice, I ride with guys who do wear them and guys who don't. I never give anyone a hard time about it one way or the other.

I'd say amongst the people I ride with the most (PGR) Its about 50/50 for and not wearing one.

Some are adamant about wearing them and they are given all respect and those who have not worn one for many years and have no intention of starting are also respected ...no one would presume to think its their place to advise or lecture one way or the other.

Perhaps its due to the nature of the average fella who rides in a lot of PGR events. Politically we are pretty much all on the same page....freedom of choice is important to us.

On the other hand otherwise politically inclined individuals often think its their responsibility to legislate to the world.

Back when I was still riding with groups around here, usually Harleys, sometimes more diverse groups, I was usually the only one wearing a helmet. I never hassled anyone about not wearing them and they never hassled me. That's the way it should be. One actually said he respected me for not bowing to peer pressure. LOL

Well Kevin ol' boy, I certainly hope that you're not referencing littler ol' ME in this last sentence o' yours!!! Because, if y'all ARE, then let me ask you a question here, amigo:

Did I EVER SAY ANY-FRIGGIN'-WHERE in my SARCASTIC RANT about my thoughts that anybody who DECIDES to NOT wear a helmet isn't usin' ALL of that there thing sittin' between their friggin' EARS that their good lord gave 'em, should have that decision "legistated" away from 'em???

NO!!!!! I NEVER DID, did I?????????

And sooooooo, while I MAY NOT make a whole lot of friends pointin' out that MY OPINION is that they're...ONCE AGAIN...NOT USIN' ALL OF THEIR FRIGGIN' BRAIN whenever they make that DECISION to NOT wear a FRIGGIN' HELMET...NOWHERE in my previous text have I EVER said that I wish those "politically inclined individuals"(i.e LAWMAKERS) to make that decision for YOU!!!

BECAUSE...first of all, as you "may" have noticed over these last few years, I OFTEN receive MUCH PLEASURE in POINTING OUT the GERERAL STUPIDITY of MANY of my fellow Americans, AND as you ALSO "may" have noticed, often times the STUPIDITY of the HUMAN RACE IN GENERAL, regardless of their friggin' NATIONALITY!!!

And SOOOOOOOO(and here's a "follow-up" question comin' your way, bro...sooooo get ready now)...WHY IN THE WORLD would I EVER(once again) EVER want some YO-YOs sittin' on their collective A$$ES at their respective state capitols to TAKE ALL THIS FUN AWAY FROM ME THAT I OFTEN DERIVE FROM THIS PRACTICE OF POINTING OUT THE STUPID DECISIONS THAT WE ALL MAKE IN OUR LIVES???

My wife would be dead now if she had not been wearing a helmet when she came off the bike and hit a curb with her head. The curb put a 2" dent in the helmet but never touched her skull.

I just never ride without one.

No. Only that individuals that do as you do publicly (lecturer) are not typically appreciated by those of us who CHOOSE to take our own risks.

We consider that type of behavior to be lacking in class amongst the greater "biker" nation where choice is appreciated.

We are not your children and we dont like to listen to your crap. (at least not on a group ride) or if we were to meet in person and you were to begin lecturing me about wearing a lid...well you would be invited to make close acqauintance with my royal Irish nether region. "Thats what I mean."

You may of course continue to practice free speech here all you like in whatever means you see fit.

Can I be more clear Dwight.?

Chris,

The "moment of stupid" you had was just a learning experience. I know lots of guys that never wear a helmet. I know lots of guys that always wear a helmet...
I always wear a helmet. It makes my wife happy and I've become used to it.

It's a matter of freedom. Not freedom to be stupid, or freedom to be a statistic, or freedom to be cool.. just freedom. What you learned was that the ride you took presented you with some hazards that a helmet might have prevented. If you only rode from bar to bar or in 5 mile spurts you might ride forever and never encounter face-altering projectiles. If you ride in an area with little traffic and few insects you could ride all day and probably never have an incident - with or without a helmet. You chose to ride lidless and had some unfortunate experiences. You could take the same ride again and nothing would happen.

It's freedom. It's choice.

Ride your ride, make your choices, and do what works for you.

The helmet argument is futile. Once you are on 2 wheels, you are at the mercy of anything and everything. Helmet or no. The right/wrong situation will kill you regardless. Wearing a kevlar body condom won't save you when the semi has you in his sights...

I doubt they will make it mandatory again there is and has been a huge lobby to get rid of the law/keep it gone. Big "Rights Rally" every year put on by Abate. That's how it was repealed in the first place. As for it being up 60% look at the percentage of the increase in riders. They have been trying to make it mandatory again ever since it was repealed, that's nothing new. The powers that be just want to make everyones decisions for them about everything they can get away with. After all they know what's good for me better than I do.

Theres alot I dont agree with when it comes to British Motor laws ;large license plates, quite, civilised and emission sensitive exhausts. The one law i do agree with is the compulsory helmet, for one simple reason, i dont trust other motorists! i'm sure the other british guys on the site would agree that some of the driving in britain is shocking!

I dont really care if its inconvenient, it keeps my head warm and a little safer. Plus, its a cool design.

Yeah i heard there was a big riders rights association fighting it and whatnot. Its gotta be the insurance companies or something giving the helmet law pressure so they dont have to pay out if someone splits their head open.

When CA enacted their helmet law, the CHP reported that motorcycle deaths dropped by 14%. Other reports said that the number of miles ridden that year had dropped by 40% so that 14% reduction was really a net increase.

All I know is that I have to follow certain rules (no matter what state or country I'm in) that say I have to wear certain gear: DOT helmet, long sleeves, long pants, boots, gloves, and something reflective - if I get squished by a semi and I have failed to put any of those things on, I just cost my kids $400,000. So I'm pretty much ATGATT.

But I'm for people deciding their own level of risk acceptance.

I know a service man told me about that here at the Tobyhanna Army Depot. I went up there one time to ride past the old equipment, it's along a public road that goes through the base, but they stopped me at the gate (never used to be any guards there until 9-11) and told me I had to wear a helmet to go any farther. I said that PA had repealed the law and he told me that didn't apply to the base since it was federal proprty and not governed by the state law. I got talking to him and he told me about what you say among some other stuff. He also rides on his off time.

I'm politically inclined and I think we should all be allowed to make our own choices, stupid or otherwise. For those who want to childproof the world the inclination goes WAAAAY beyond helmets.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

I've noticed a new trend in sport bike riders around here.
It looks like the bike matching helmet is no longer in fashon.Used to be it was rare to see a gxxer without a full
face bucket on. Now I'd say 3 out of every 4 now weave through traffic at a buck 10 sans helmet. But I guess at that speed, a helmet would only be good for helping the cops find your head.

Also have noticed a lot of scooters are popping up. One or two doing some moronic stuff. Like down the sidewalk kinda moronic. If that keeps up they'll get regulated right out of existance.

The percentage you're paying is too high-priced While you're living beyond all your means And the man in the suit has just bought a new car From the profit he's made on your dreams

Yes, lots of new scooters everywhere. My guess is that most of them have never ridden a bike before and have no survival skills and are ignorant (and/or don't care) to any laws.

The scary thing is that people think scooters are somewhow safer...becuase they don't go as fast? Because the scooter drivers don't wear any protective gear? I don't get it.

Scooters are safer.... they are so small the driver of the car or truck that runs them over rarely gets injured
