I had heard ~~ many times ~~ that with the systems of locks and dams Old Man River would never flood again.
John MacPhee wrote an informative book about the Mississippi river, from Minnesota to the Gulf, what it has done down through time, also chronicling our engineering attempts to harness it's excesses. Granted, much of today's events are on the big river.
Doesn't do much to salve the wounds, communities and lives under water. Except to say, if nothing else, river people are resilient.
