right cylinder cuts out. this has happened at least 5 ties in the past 3 years. it happens either when it's cool early in a ride or hot after a long ride and appears to be random, and it always the right jug. usually it lasts 10 minutes or so then just resolves itself. usually w/ a back fire. could this be a coil problem? i tried inspecting the plug/coil wire and it looks fine. new coils? cat

Sounds like a coil, you could check it out by swopping the coils round,

Exactly my thoughts, physically swap the coils and see if the problem moves to the left side.

new plugs? They cause a lot of problems and are cheap enough

Try your coils, if it persists, change plugs like Pat says, if it still persists try swopping the leads over.. if it carries on think CDI and hope and pray it isn't

got some nology coils/wires coming. searching the CDI problems, it seems like this has been a hot topic. boy, it really makes me think about the bike. i've had good luck at 24,000 miles, but i see where one guy had 4 installed. i wonder how many owners have had just coil problems vs CDI problems. reading back pages here makes me think the likelihood of a coil being bad is a bit remote.
i also see there was a triumph sheet on gapping something in the ? from .10 to .08...
this what happens when i move and have to stop riding for a while, i lose touch and important information...
maybe i should take it to the dealer after i install the coils?
i guess i need to swap leads and plug wires to the coils and see if it repeats on the opposite side.

The spec change on the gap is the sensor/pickup coil under the right cover that sends the firing pulse to the ignitor, changed from 1.0 mm to 0.8 mm and reported to cure future ignition failures. Please swap your original coils first and see if the problem migrates with the coil, it's going to be the only way to truly diagnose the problem.

swapped all the wires out and ran it in the neighborhood and it started to rain but it did cut out in the garage, and after swapping coils, it's still the right side.
so the next step is the plugs?
thanks for your help btw cat

If you have a bad coil the problem will move with it. If you have a faulty ignitor, the problem will remain on the same side.

Getting a goodwill swap on a CDI is a hit & miss proposition. In any case, the problem will have to be diagnosed by a dealer.
Said Molly to James, that's a fine motorbike.

Not all the time, I diagnosed mine, by taking it off my bike and trying it on one that was running fine. I telephoned Triumph Hinckley who sent one out to the dealer for me to pick up. Put it on the bike and bingo works perfect again. Maybe with me being on my 3rd replacement has something to do with it, or the fact that the dealer had no bike to try my old CDI on, as they are all EFI in the UK now.
