I have in mind to ride from Ottawa to Seattle this season. Here's my planned route - I'm excited! Doing it in August would fit with some family schedule things but I'm worried about the heat. I wasn't too worried about Northern US until I looked at historical temps for Rapid City SD. Last year Aug 10 was 103 degrees and the year before was high 90's. I don't mind the heat but that sounds like a bit much. Has anybody else made this run in high summer?

I was at Sturgis last year. It was really hot a few days but not unbearable. Just be sure to stay well hydrated during your legs. Drink plenty to start out and carry water with you. Drink often and then drink some more.
On the other hand the weather in that region of the North can be really freaky. You could wake up one morning to some really LOW temps as well.
the possibilty of high plains thunderstorms always exists as well.

Give a shout when you know your travel dates Bill, you'll be coming through my front yard (J). There's much better two lane roads than the I system in western MT, depending how much time you have . Heat? Ya, drink lots of water, we've had numerous 100d July/August days the last few years. It's not so bad if you use your head. On the other hand, they're currently calling for high country snow showers jh

If you have a vented jacket, wear a t-shirt soaked in water under it. The slowly evaporating water will act like an A/C unit. It also doesn't hurt to soak the lining of your helmet.

Thanks for the encouragement. The Interstate route is just a placeholder to give me distances. I plan to leave Ottawa Aug 1st and get to Seattle Aug 14 or 15. That will allow me 11 easy days of 300-ish miles and 3-4 days off the bike. I'd sure appreciate pointers on roads and sights along my route. My only anchoring points are that I do want to see the Black Hills/Mount Rushmore (it's that whole "North by Northwest" thing) and I want to see Yellowstone Park. Aside from those I just want roads that will let me make decent progress west. Oh, and I might look for some Lewis & Clark sightseeing action too.
Also, anyone with a spare bed (or a large closet) and willing to bunk me a night in there could PM me.
I'm SO excited.

Bill,
I see you are going to ride through Chicago. Have you considered cutting straight across Michigan and taking the ferry from Muskegon to Milwaukee? Might be more enjoyable if you can time it right.

Thanks - that looks wondeful and it would save a few hundred km. Expensive though: $70+$50+$12 for me and the bike. Maybe I'll have to hope for the US$ to fall further vs the cdn so it won't seem so bad.

ok, I got my travel planning package from the CAA so I must actually be going! Their route is straight interstate of course, much like what I posted first but now I have to plan the real thing. I’ll be crossing over from Canada into Michigan then either around Chicago or maybe by ferry to Milwaukee. Once I get to South Dakota my route is a bit set by things I want to see. My current thinking is to cross the mississipi at Dubuque and go through iowa and Nebraska on some combination of Highways 20 & 30 going up into south Dakota through the badlands national park. This is like 1,000 miles so I’ll probably stop a couple of nights unless I get bored. Anybody got any suggestions for things to see/do on the route or alternates? Good places to eat, cheap places to stay? Anybody want to meet up? This will be like Aug 4-6.

Just something to consider: Yellowstone/bike/camping/BEARS/BIG BEARS/LOTS OF BIG HUNGRY NOT AFRAID OF PEOPLE BEARS!!!! Be careful there, it is beautiful but camping, especially in tents is a bit hazardous. They have cabins that are fairly decently priced as well.

not planning to camp or even overnight in the park but I wonder if they'll chase a bike like a big aggressive dog? Maybe I better pack extra underwear!

Awwww, Pat's just yanking your chain, although there's a popular t shirt showing bear tracks and Vibram boot prints converging in the centre, a minor scuffle and bear tracks exiting the far side. "Bears 1 Hikers 0". If you stay in West Yellowstone, head west to Ennis and over to Virginia City (Hwy 287). From there you could go north towards Helena and ride some nice roads west over the Blackfoot high country, Avon, Clearwater Jct. Hwy 12, 141, 200 into Missoula) jh

Bill, no way can you even get a glimpse of the park in a single day. the place is huge! About as big as all of Ontario, but with more tourists. Plan on spending at least a couple of days there, it is well worth it and someplace you will never forget.

My daughter works in seattle and my wife is flying out to meet me on the 15th. We're flying home from seattle and i'm going to get the bike shipped back (unless someone is looking for a one-way ride ). Thanks for your offer of a bunk, I'll PM you when I know my specific dates.

We didn't see a bear the WHOLE week we were at Yellowstone (last week of June/1st of July)- saw one black bear headed off into the woods down in the Tetons. The Bison are apparently more dangerous this year than the bears, per the stories I heard and read while there. Becky

Bears are easy to find in Yellowstone. Just drive/ride around and watch for groups of idiots with cameras lining the side of the road (out of their cars). Some sort of wildlife in nearby guaranteed, whether moose (or was that elk? I dunno, I'm a city boy), buffalo or bear. I'm amazed there aren't more maulings or gorings...

Just wondering John, moose or elk I understand but buffalo or bear? You can't tell the difference between buffalos and bears??!! City boy or not, that's shocking!

So how was the rest of your trip Becky? I just missed you in Montrose, Co but got to ride with Mike/FCTush for a bit the day you were supposed to show up at his house. Could you throw up a few pics with some commentary about your trip? I'd like to hear how it went.

I'm into my countdown now with 9 sleeps to go before i leave aug 2. I've booked cheap motels where i could with same-day cancellation so things may change. My plan right now looks like: Ottawa->Toronto->Lansing Michigan->Dubuque->Sioux City->Gordon NE->Custer SD(Rushmore)->Buffalo WY->Cody WY, Yellowstone, Yellowstone->Helena MT->Thompson Falls MT->Somewhere-in-Idaho->Seattle.
I'm pretty sure I'll get to hook up with Freedom and Friar John and at least one Seattle area member.
I'm excited! I just hope this darned rain stops, we've had rain every other day all of june and july.

Hey Bob, I think this is later than your arrival here, but I plan on riding out to Mount Vernon, WA on Friday, August 15th. Thompson Pass-Kingston, ID; 35 miles of I 90, hit Hwy 2 west of Spokane, cross the wheat fields & river canyons through Wenatchee and over the Cascades out to Everett where I turn North on State Hwy 9. jh

RE Hot Weather riding. Here in Vegas it has been in the low hundreds for weeks. With low humidity it feels like you are riding into a Jolly Green Giant hair drier. You lose sweat real fast and unless you rehydrate constantly you will eventually get heat exhaustion. I know. I have had it and it is not fun. You get really stupid, lethargic, slow and eventually you will pass out. My solution is to ride with a large (64 oz) insulated plastic jug full of ice and gatorade. I also carry 2 or 3 qt milk containers with more gatorade. If necessary I can stop at a 7-11 and get more ice. You must drink at least a quart of water or whatever (not soda or caffine) every half hour. You lose water really fast riding at 75 mph in a hot wind. You never feel the sweat on you because is is wicked away from your skin and evaporates instantly. It does cool you down but you are losing valuable water which you must constantly replace. Do they make an insulated camelback?

Just one more sleep til the starship seattle leaves ottawa. That extra bag behind my seat will be filled with gatorade and bendy straws. wish me luck and I hope everyone travelling to Italy, New Hampshire and elsewhere is darned careful. There are little old ladies out there who will run over your foot.

I'm planning to leave thompson Falls the day before that john and stop a bit short of seattle so my last day's ride into the emerald city is short. If I'm not too worn out I might kill a day and do it on the 15th with you.

thanks for the interest bob. I'm now in sight of the Rockies and will be in the yellowstone area tonight. It's been a great ride so far - especially the black hills area. Sturgis is on this week so there were lots of he types around. The only other triumphs I saw were a couple of RIIIs.
I'm still not clear what my final run into Seattle will be but I look forward to talking to you soon.
Oops by the way - that was the big horn range.

I had the privilege of showing Bill some good old fashioned Montana hospitality this evening. We had quite the discussion about mileage, air-fuel mixture, elevation, etc. over dinner at one of the local microbreweries. Freedom, you're up next!

Friar, Sounds like Bill will have plenty of time to wander over here today. I'd suggest he take the Avon (?) cutoff up to Hwy 200 & Clearwater Jct and down the Blackfoot River. Hospitality, hmmmm, maybe more MT brewery products & the obligatory "Raised in Big Sky" hamburger. Bob, Cyphocleonus is an insect imported to battle the imported noxious spotted knapweed which has invaded 6-7 million acres of this landscape over the past 50 years. "Weeds r Us", it's part of what I do. A strange life true, but it keeps me "off the street", or is that "on the road" jh
