The rain issue seems to have been cleared by people cutting the end of the hose on an angle which limits water being sucked in and clogging the hose. As for for it happening during a hot day, I would think your vent hose must be pinched.
Yup. Vapor lock doesn't happen with gravity feed. It's more like a vacuum lock.
