Legend has lower seat height and a 5 speed trans. TBS has sportier riding postion with rear sets and drag type bars, dual front brake, different exhaust, 6 speed trans, adjustable suspension front and rear, claimed more HP.
Both were pretty bullet proof and great rides.
(unless you insert a whole bunch of #3 washers were they don't belong......)

Legend also has lower compression and milder cams. And the TBS has a lower state of tune than the Trident. And the Super III 'trumps' them all.

That's interesting stuff, I hadn't heard or looked for the differences before. I thought they were like speedmaster/bonneville america, where T.Inc used a linguistic version of smoke n' mirrors (re speedmaster) to get people to think they were buying a faster, sportier version. Only to have their hopes and dreams dashed on the cold, hard reality of the world's asphalt ribbons.
Granted that black n yellow thing bikerthug used to pilot had some real zip to it

and then there is the adventurer,,, of which i am also the proud owner of,, an '01 in semi-mint shape. [throw enough money at something and it has to look good] these really are some great old bikes,, to not be too old..

I liked the Adventurer.. really cool bikes. Loved the rear fender.... I have a Legend and though I can't find my sources of information now, I checked once and I'm pretty sure the hp is the same across the board. Just a change in the riding position mostly and the T-bird had the shiny bits.
The Legend is a really cool bike.. love that sucker.. torque from here to there and just loves rpm's, 17" wheels front and rear.. single front disc brake though but it's certainly not lacking for brakes. The riding position is great with feet under you but the seat is a bit narrow for my butt.

Triumph claimed 83hp for the Thunderbird Sport and 97hp for the Trident. If that's not a lower state of tune, then what do you call it?

I took a two-day ride on a Legend about 6 or 7 years ago. I was surprised at how well they handle ... or was it just me (correction: or was it just me who thinks so)?

Yep Thanassis, I'll bet the Legend probably did handle just a little better than the rest of the old 300 series, as if I recall correctly, not only was it's seat height lower, but I believe it's suspension was lowered and thus the whole bike had a lower center-of-gravity than the rest of the line back then, which had pretty high gravity centers. (and I should know...I still have my old '95 Sprint, which ONE OF THESE DAYS I'm going to replace it's starter clutch)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

OK, 97HP for the Trident, 83HP for the Tiger and Thunderbird Sport, and 69HP for the Legend TT. So what spec was changed?

I guess it depends on your information source.. this article says 69 hp with a possible 82 with the addition of Speed Triple cams. My repair manual says all three were rated at 70 hp.. wish I could find that Triumph page that had a break down of all the models..

I wonder if you could take the engine off a new Speed Triple and put it on a Thunderbird? Swap over the pipes and chrome bits and you'd have a very nice bike and the sleeper of the year.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Don't think it would fit. The intakes would hit the frame. Why not swap the engine from a 1200 Daytona? Strongest Triumph this side of an RIII.
