As I am still peeling from my last good ride, that begs the question, what kind of sunblock do you guys wear?

I like Banana Boat Quick Dry Sport 30 spray. It's easy to apply on my gorilla arms, if I choose to go jacket-less.

I like spray on 30 SPF as well. I'm a red head (or at least, I USED to be...), and we didn't have sunscreen when I was a youngster and got burned numerous times in FL and CA. I have to be super careful now, since as you know, skin damage is accumulative, and I'm at a higher risk of cancer.

I'd say if you're still peeling then go with at least 45spf.

Find anything that has zinc oxide in it! I use a private brand name remergent that a friends wife turned me on to. Look it up on the internet. I am bald and dont burn AT ALL!!! I am an airshow performer for work so I am on the hot tarmac 12 hours a day in the sun and have no problems. Look up the remergent online and get ya a bottle...I have had the same on for almost 2 years applying almost every day-a little goes a log way. If you dont want to spend the money and time on that, just make sure it has the Zinc in it and you WONT BURN, but will still tan. Good luck!

I can recomend what not to use... That spray on stuff, it seemed like a great idea until about day 3 of my bike trip. All the dirt from the road was sticking to me and it just about took a wire brush to get it off. Soap would barely do it and I was black.

Apparently that stuff doesn't age well either. I used some that I had left over from last summer and it worked more like cooking oil than sunblock. I got dark fast!

Around here ......its necessary to use a sunblock if you are gonna be riding for much more than fifteen minutes.
A fair skinned gringo can get sunburned in about 10 to fifiteen minutes in that prime zone between 11:30 AM and 2:30 PM in June.
I am darkly tanned but I have to apply sunscreen to the nose and forehead or they will both crisp up nice after a day of riding.
It'll take a lot of tomatoes to ward off the sun around here.

I just finished about 1800 miles and was surprised at how well the Walgreens SPF 50 spray on works for the $. About $8 a can (Same size, SPF name brand $11). Used it once in the morning and was good all day (sleeveless T-shirt) I didn't burn, but when I got home my heritage was questioned! later, Tom.
But, what do I know?

Armored mesh jacket, long pants, vented gloves and a full coverage helmet pretty much take care of the problem for me.

Yea. If you wear all the atypical gear you cant possibly get so much as a slight discoloration of the skin.
its a non issue for those who choose to wear all the gear.
Around here you dont see many people wearing full armored long sleeve jackets full finger gloves et al. Most of the ones who do are the crotch rocket weennies who ride their bikes in short bursts and those boys sweat buckets..but they do stay safe. Gotta give em credit for that.
I cant imaging riding up to Phoenix on the slab for a couple of hours in 105 dry heat with a full armored mesh jacket, full helmet , full finger cloves and armored jeans or chaps
Too hot and too uncomfortable.

If you wear a mesh jacket it's as good as a t-shirt while you're moving. A whole lot better if you go down.

When I was younger and rode to the beach nearly every weekend, I used Hawaiian Tropic. That seemed to do the job and smelled like coconuts. Quote:

I work with a dermatologist and we recommend titanium oxide or zinc oxide. The Parsol stuff doesn't absorb as much UVB. Throw all sunscreen away at the end of the season and buy new - just like prescriptions there is a shelf life of ~1 year. Kinesys is a good product, but it contains Parsol: http://www.kinesysstore.com/default.aspWe do sell it at the office because it's one of the better spray-ons and I use it on the bike and boat.

I'm pretty sure I'll have to find a good sunblock. I was wearing a lightwieght longsleve t-shirt and I came back as red as my bike! I did use sunblock on my face and I only burned a little there.

Nah, Kevin. It gets hot in Vegas too. I wear an armored mesh jacket, full finger (perforated) gloves and a full face helmet no matter how hot. Hot asphalt can cause third degree burns in seconds. To each his own, but the fact is that they're actually cooler than the sun on bare skin, like being in the shade. Might get a bit warm sitting still, but not unbearable, and who sits still that much anyway? Sun screen still needed on nose and cheeks, the desert sun is merciless. I use the Coppertone spf 30 or 50 with the clip so that I can hang it on my windshield. Whenever I stop to fuel up, I re-cover myself with sunblock...works for me so far...the only place I got burned was above my shirt sleeves where I forgot to cover.

Guess I'm pretty dumb... I rode across I80 from Cali to Ohio in July...wearing a heavy leather jacket, leather pants, gloves and a ff helmet and boots. Actually was quite comfortable all zipped up until the tempos got over 100f. then it got a bit warm. bad thing was my jacket faded on the wrinkles... ( I also use sunblock, except on my forehead, don't like it dripping in my eyes. You can get a sunburn thru a clear visor....<G> mary

+1 on the Neutrogena. No greasy residue and it lasts long.... I think a couple of parmacies like CVS have a genric version that's cheaper and just as good for avoiding that greased pig feeling.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I found Coppertone Sport 70 SPF and used that with good results this weekend. It isn't exactly greasy, but there is a bit of a tacky residue . . . I'll keep using it until I find Neutrogena.

Nobody said you were dumb....just hotter than I am when I ride without all the gear.
You can pontificate all you want but at 105 a T-shirt is just fine for me and plenty of water to stay hydrated.
Its all personal preference. What is comfortable for you would no doubt be to hot and restrictive for others.

Ah ...contraire me fine French wannabe. The post merely introduces a truth as to the wearing of various apparel or the lack of it in this neck of the woods. Indeed the two types of bikes tend to illustrate different types of riders.
You do not for the most part see the crotch rocket crowd up on the slab much except for the short bursts they do in commuting.
Out in the open rode running for hours on end are your cruisers and sport/touring rides.
As to what is worn...its an open book but the types of bikes follow their respective stereotypes with an alarming regularity for the most part.
