My 18 year old son Steve just left the driveway on the Suzuki GS450 and I'm a mess. I took him down to a local neighbhorhood to practice and he did great. He took the safety course a year ago and passed with flying colors but I'm still nervous. He just left to go show his friends the bike him and his dad worked all winter on to restore. I'm not sure who's prouder, me or him. He has all his safety gear on but I'm still nervous. Maybe it's all the yahoos out there not paying attention. Oh well, I guess it's part of growing up and he'll be ok.

Man, how cool is that? He'll do great, he had good guidance.

Yep, part of us parents growing up is to be able to let our kids grow a bit too. Easier said than done.

Bob and I know how you feel too. Our son Matt bought his RocketIII a year ago, and with him stationed in NJ, we never know when he rides. So that can either be a good thing or a bad thing. Depends on your perspective. He is a safe rider though.

Since he worked all winter on it, he'll probably treat it with respect. Now, if it was one of those cases where a 15 year old is handed a new race bike so he'll stop screaming and banging his head on the floor....

My 18 yr old and I made his 1st trip to M/B bike week this year, THAT was cool, and just got back from the Dragon last week which by the way he rode (and Loves)the speedy through the Dragon, Cherohala and the ****** bender, (did exelent) I took the Dyna. Hes been ridin 4 wheelers, mini bikes and dirt bikes since he was 4. I taught him how to ride street on a 700 Virago (wifes bike) and he was ridin my Harley when he was 16. Hes got a 94 800 Marauder now. Its cool cause he has no desire to get a crotch rocket, he likes cruisers. All you can do is teach them the best you can, and hope it sticks with them. I harp on the saftey stuff as much as i can with him.

My 24 yr old daughter has been riding a 500 Kaw Ninja for the past two years. So far, she's riding safe, wears full gear (more than she can say for her dad..) and hasn't had any incidents. She passed the MSF course (I paid) but I'm still very nervous when she rides with me, or discusses rides with other folks. I guess I'll never get over that apprehension. We lost a mother of five kids here in MD over the holiday weekend. First ride with her husband after passing the safety course and getting her license. Hit & run vicitim, still haven't caught the guy yet.

I feel your pain...Kimmy is leaving out at O dark thirty Sunday morning on her bike to the Nantahala area to volunteer as a cook for the Air Force JROTC leadership camp, and will be gone till Wednesday...You would'nt believe whats been going through my mind. I am gonna stash a couple of phone numbers,as I will be out of town until late Wednesday afternoon. I'm also sending one of the igniters off of frog, since they are laying on the bench in the garage anyway, and is the most likely part to fail on her....Anyone else in the North Carolina, Nantahala area that I could give a phone number to would be great, if she needs help...She is a great rider, and I have all the confidence in the world for her, but Im still gonna be worried....

He made it back safe and sound and no incidents. He was grinning from ear to ear. He loved his first real ride on the bike. I need to take some pics of the him and the Suzuki. Thanks for all the words or encouragement.

Hey Doc. Anna and I are up here in Cleveland, Ga. not too far from Nantahala. Don't mind her having our number, "just in case". I also have a trailer set up to carry my America, also, "just in case".
Anyway, I'll PM you my number so it's not known to the entire world.

My mother was great. She was a single mother raising three sons in the 1960’s and early 70’s. Lot’s of women are way too protective of their sons but she realized that if we were going to be regular men we were going to have to do all those guy things that many single mothers try to keep their sons from doing. She encouraged us to play football, wrestle or participate in other sports. She was an assistant den mother when I was a cub scout, understood I wasn’t a problem child just because I got in a few fights growing up and helped me buy my first motorcycle despite being scared half to death I’d kill myself. She was always there if we needed her but she gave us space to be boys. Considering what she had to work with I think she did a pretty good job.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Well, my daughters motorcycle came to an undeserved end on Sunday. She's OK, but has small bone chip on each foot and a few scrapes. She called me from the side of the road yesterday afternoon. She was on Rt. 30 near McConnelsburg PA. It's a pretty wicked, windy road up the mountain (a blast to ride carefully..). She was last in her group of six other riders and carried too much speed into a corner. She low-sided, hit the guardrail than slid back across the road and arrived standing up. Her full-face Shoei lost the shield and took some scratches. Her jacket has a few small tears. Road rash on part of her back. Had she been wearing riding boots (good sport boots), she probably would have had no injury. I picked her up from the hospital and she's on crutches, and can't drive her clutch car. I haven't seen the bike, but it sounds toast (95 Ninja). I suggested she just take what Progressive gives her and sit out for a while. She won't get much for the bike and can't afford a new one. Her insurance would also likely sky-rocket. Last Sunday, she called and said a guy from her group (Yam R1) was riding a wheelie, went off the road, crashed breaking his color bone. I suggested she was riding with too fast a group but of course that advice wasn't desired. She was most likely trying to catch up yesterday. Thank goodness her injuries were minor and she wasn't hit by a car from behind or the other side. Now my wife, always a reluctant rider is petrified. It's going to be a long summer. Keep a close on on those kids! Quote:
