I'm not doubting you Ed, but do you all really think a 900lb. tourer can pop a wheelie, like that??? If it was a Sprint, Concours or FJR 1300 or even a BMW 1200 RT, I could see it.

That's not neccessarily true there, John.

(There IS a school-of-thought out there that if your Mom and/or Dad would have co-signed for it and THEN given you one o' those gremlin bells to put on it, you'd still be around today, ya know!!!)

I think its most likely a set up shot, I was trying to inject some humor into what was becoming an increasingly bitter discussion. All of us riders are "a breed apart" and when we start segregating ourselves our common strength is depleted and then we lose.

here's another, Google images is chock full of this stuff:

Well SURE it's photoshop'd, Mark!(and NOT because it's not a sportbike EITHER!!!)

You see...NO "real" Harley rider ever wears a helmet!(unless of course "The Man" makes 'em wear one...which then one of those little "beany" ones is perfectly acceptable, ya know)

You see...You always look much "cooler" and much more "macho" ridin' a Harley without wearing a helmet, ya know! I mean, "EVERYBODY KNOWS" only those dweeb Harley riders ever wear a real friggin' helmet!!!(and of course, all those "rikiracers" out there too)

And so NATURALLY someone MUST HAVE photoshop'd those 3/4 open-face "brain-buckets" onto this couple's heads...RIGHT?!

(but I have to say WHOEVER it was DID DO a very nice job with their computer of matching the paint on their helmets with the paint on their Electra-Glide alright!!!)

Yup. Used to even pop the front wheels on a stock Ford N9. It's all in the balance, and having a passenger helps a lot.

I think it's a gross oversight when you mention the flipflop/tanktop wearing squids. Per capita, the cruiserbike riders without gear (wearing a skullcap or no helmet, no gloves, and no jacket) vastly outnumber the sportbike riders. If anyone doesn't believe me, I'd be thrilled to sit with a cooler of beer with ya and count the bikes go by and prove my point.

Mark, anytime you want to come over to my house and sit on the beach with the cooler of beer I'm game. I'll tell you what we'll do. We'll try to drink one beer for every cruiser that goes by with a rider or passenger who has no helmet, no gloves, no jacket, no appropriate footwear. I'm willing to bet we'll be dead from alcohol poisoning by morning

I'm certain that you could pull a whole host of pics of any number of two wheeled vehicles doing a wheelie...but if you happen to see it ON THE STREET WHILE RIDING (not at some expo/demo/show...love the capt America suit) I bet I never get to open a beer from that cooler if we only drink for cruisers, tourers, standards, mopeds, that wheelie by us...and just for sh!ts for every "squid" we see 'performing' their own private stunt show...is one day with no drinks for you....

And as far as the Gear is concerned...I live in the "live free or die" state and yes a vast majority of cruiser, tourer, standard, and moped riders DO go with the do-rag or bean bucket...and there I have to agree I've seen Plenty of "squids" and their very hot scantily clad passengers wearing shorts tank tops flip flops and a $600.00 SHOEI full face...

At least her face will look good in the box...

Again I have nothing against the machine...in fact I like them SO much that I will not own one...I was young and foolish once...and yes I rode in shorts, tanktop, SANDLES, But I did wear a helmet... well at least until I got to the MA/NH border...and yes I did get into a tremendous speed wobble at over 125 MPH while riding on the highway (RT 93 thru Woburn MA to be exact) All of this only further enforces my position...I was young & stupid and faster, bigger, and more powerful was the way to go...Nothing felt better than that Ninja 750 at 130MPH except that Ninja 750 at 140...but all of the studies back my position...if your under 30 and you ride a sportbike (which are SO much better than when I was too stupid and invincible) you are SIGNIFICANTLY more likely to die....and bikes are SO much more popular around the younger crowd then they were when I was younger...bike registrations are higher now then ever (and the gas $$$ will only drive that higher) And despite my transgressions "street stunts" were never the "rage" they are now...

Nope! been there done that...very fine young lady in a mini skirt lace top and heals full face...and no apparent need for undergarments (which afforded a great view when she mounted or dismounted...not to mention the view others must have had from behind (so to speak) me on the street....but again that points to the young and foolish thing...not to mention VERY lucky to had made it thru that so I can be old and foolish

Plus I find road rash scars can really screw up the whole "hot chick" thing

Maybe 30 years ago. Back and neck hurt now just looking at 'em. Can't imagine driving beyond an hour on one before having to stop and realign the spine.

I knew what the HP/torque rating of my America was going in. Pushed a few more ponies out of it just for giggles. I'd own a 675 if I wanted to go really fast. I can afford it, but choose not to. Where do I need to go that fast?

Pretty bike (Daytona 675 Special) though, just not my pint of Guinness.

I'm not buying the one's safer than the other argument. Safety's based on the discipline of the rider.

Regards,

Tom

The only reason I don't have a sport bike next to my Speedy is the lack of $$$. Still may be able to buy A Ninga 250 in a couple of years(great gas mileage) If money were not an object I would have a Speed Triple or an Aprilia. Out side Triumph Aprilia's are just drop dead sexy. Oh I wouldn't mind a Ducati Sport Clasic GT 1000 or the new(Red) 696 or S2R 1000 monster!

I take back my previous stated yearning for the 675 Daytona.

You see...after reading the glowing review in this latest issue of "Cycle World" of the Daytona 675-based STREET TRIPLE, and realizing that at 56, I may not be "limber enough" anymore for the Daytona(of which I took a SHORT test ride about a year ago, BTW)...I WANT ONE O' THOSE!!!

(yep...now THERE'S a reasonably comfortable, light, powerful and extremely manueverable "crotch rocket" for ya, folks!)

You have a good point about the lack of gear on lots of cruiser riders.

This past weekend riding in the mountains in TN And NC I'll have to admit all of the "squid" types were well geared up, many in full armored leathers and only about half of the cruiser crowd was even half serious about gear. The only flip-flops and sandals I saw were on pillion riders on HDs.

Yep have to agree here, most every time I see a herd of harleys none of them have helmets on. It's usually the the guy riding alone or small groups that will be wearing gear.

But then we are talking 2 differnt breeds of sheep here.
It is like totally uncool to wear a helmet on a harley.

And a bike matching helmet is part of the sportbike uniform.

In the end it's all about horsepower and skill. Whether it's bikes or cars, young and/or unskilled drivers make way too many mistakes when gifted with excessive horsepower. Couple big ponies with youthful exuberance and a desire to show off and it's only a matter of time.

Judgmental gossiping old men complaining about youth and the fun its having. We have become those who complained about us.

Young people have been killing themselves for speed long before the CBR-RR was released. You older riders never complained in the 60s and 70s about the bikes having too much horsepower. You would squeeze every little pony you could out of it. You still do it! Big bore this, Freak that.

Lets all go hide under our beds. The go fast kids are out! Oh my!

Even though the difference is 80HP hypocrite would still apply in many of these posts. I would rather have a kid on one wheel racing through life than have him in a low rider with a gun and an attitude. There are worse things kids can do.

Every generation seems to find their own way just fine and every set of old farts seems to sit by and whine because they are too old to participate. Accept it, you don't even matter to the guy on a sport bike. To him, you are just an old used to be still trying to do.

I agree with the original post.

I love bikes...ALL bikes, whether they be crotch-rockets or scooters or pedal bikes. I CHOOSE to ride a Speedie. I CHOOSE to wear all the gear. I choose when I ride. I choose when to twist the loud handle, I choose when to hang back. I choose when to do 25 in a 30 zone or 35 in a 30 zone.
Just like you choose what to ride, what you wear and when and how to ride.
And if you pass me on the road, I'll wave, regardless of your choices.
Now, you have a choice: you can choose whether or not to leave a reply.

Well i seemed to have joined this one late. I like sport bikes, always have and always will, and if it was not for the lack of funds would have a few tucked away in my garage. Japaneese, Italian, German, British. Love them all. Especially the Italians.

Bikes are bikes. Crusiers, Tourers, Sports, or full out road legal race bikes. They are all nothing but harmless machines, there for our riding pleasure. It is the morons who sit upon them that make them dangerous.

And if i may pick up on a comment i read earlier. In my experience, it is the crusier riders who are less likely to take the riding gear seriously. Seeing people tooling down the road on a crusier dressed only in a t-shirt and, half shell helmets and tennis shoes is much more common then barely dressed riders on their sport bikes. The majority of the people i see on sportbikes are fully decked out in there dayglo green and red power ranger suites, and $500 Aria helmets.

Though i do cring when ever i see a young girl on the back of a bike (any bike for that matter) dressed only in a tee shirt and shorts.

Well my 1 year old Tiger 1050 is not a crotchrocket but it does generate similiar feelings....and even with the prettier looks of my prior '04 America I will not go back to ANY cruiser style bike...the Tiger is truly, to quote another, "superior in every way" to my America except maybe looks and lower seat....that's it. Not to say I wouldn't be tempted by something like a thruxton, t100, etc.

I admit it, I've been lurking on the Tiger1050 forum under the guise of it being "a learning experience." I'd love to demo one and just see if it isn't the proper compliment to my America so I can dip into "both worlds."
