Detailed test results of my evaluation of the Slipstreamer SS-30 Classic screen.
I removed the fork shrouds from my 03 America to duplicate and confirm fitment for the 07-08 bikes with the tapered fork shrouds for the Slipstreamer fork mount windscreens.
I was surprised by the look and performance of the Slipstreamer SS-30 Classic screen. I was sent a 17" screen for my test and mounted it at it's highest location on the fork tubes, placing it exactly 18" above the headlight.
At this location I look through a majority of the screen, but can also look over it (I am 5'6") I was surprised by the optics of this screen, clear and undistorted it was not as bad as I would have thought to look through it.
At this height with this screen at the highest position possible (and can be lower), there is a 1" gap around the headlight. I do not get excessive wind coming through there. I did not notice any difference between this screen with the 1" gap and my Alley Cat with 1/2" gap. I do how ever have a visor on my headlight that may influence air flow in this area.
Buffeting/turbulence. I was greatly surprised there was the same or less turbulence than what I get with my Alley Cat and Lowers. (No lowers were tested with this screen) I could easily wear my normal eyeglasses without excessive vibration and I experienced NO tearing. It was actually quieter behind the screen than with my Alley Cat, but keep in mind also, I look over the top of the Alley Cat on my bike, not through it and the SS-30 is wider which I contribute to the quieter ride.
There remained upward airflow that comes up from under by the tank. This is the airflow that is disrupted with the use of lowers.
Stability, and performance in high winds and high speeds was remarkable. I ran the bike up to 95 mph for one mile on a relatively calm day and the bike performed flawlessly as did the screen. It did not bend or flex. I also rode it on a very windy day and it performed admirably and was not moved around any more or less than on a windy day without a screen. I would say it even performed better than my beloved Alley Cat! Which I attribute to the extra width of the Classic, a notable difference that only 2.5" makes in width.
Over all I am very pleased with the look and performance of this screen. Another big plus is that it WORKS with the Triumph light bar WITHOUT modifying the plastic.
The look without the upper fork shrouds is not as bad as one would imagine and remains the only option for the 07+ bikes. This screen will work with any of the 02-06 bikes with their fork shrouds in place.
I rode at night and looking through the screen, again surprised me that it was not as bad as I thought it would be.
Now, there are other height options for these screens, I just tested the 17" screen at the 18" height, 17" I would be able to look over. This screen also comes in a 22" screen, which would also allow for 23" over the headlight for those who want to look completely through it or are tall and can look over that size screen.
Again, no matter what screen you choose, the highest screen you can tolerate looking over or through diminishes the amount of buffeting/turbulence. Also, Lowers great reduces this too.
