One of the reasons I installed an airbox elimination kit was that I thought the fake air filter covers were a little cheesy (pun intended) in that they were, well, fake. The airbox elimination kit was appealing to me in that with the K&N filters my fake air filter covers would be converted to real air filter covers through which the K&N filters would be visible. After i installed it, I was distressed to learn that while that was true for the right side, it's not true for the left side. On the left side, a black plastic shroud remains between the fake air cleaner cover and the K&N filter. My idea is to drill holes in this black plastic shroud the same size as the fake air cleaner holes and right underneath the fake air cleaner holes. My thinking is that then the K&N filter would be visible through the fake air cleaner on the left side. Has anyone tried this?

I've done that, twice. At some point (in time) the lower part of the plastic shroud broke where the lower fastener holds the cheese grater in place. After a year of super glueing that little tapped metal piece in place, I recently bought a new replacement & just finished drilling it out.

I can't really see the k/n through the holes, but I did it mostly to improve air flow. Whether or not it helps, who knows, but I feel better

I actually cut the mounting tabs out of the black plastic piece so it's totally open. Only thing is it leaves a random grommet right under the seat where the rear tab of that cover attaches. I stuck my Gerbings plug in there. More recently I fasioned new tabs out of 1" aluminum stock on my bench vice. No sweat. I'd post pics but...
