1. Thou shall know thy ride.
Take time to familiarize yourself with the controls, the switches, the drive train, the brakes, the tires, etc. You must become "One" with your ride. Learn how it works and why it works. And what to do when it doesn't.

2. Thou must wear the gear.
Helmets, leather, armor, boots, gloves. All a personal preference depending on the risks you are willing to accept. Don't let others dictate your safety. Cool is for fools.

3. Thou must become legal.
Take a course. Practice, practice, practice. Then practice some more. Get a permit. Get a license. Read up on riding technique.

4. Thou must know thy limitations.
Don't ride if you're tired, excited, depressed, or in a big hurry. Cesar Milan is right - you must be in a calm, submissive state before you get a treat.

5. Thou must obey the law.
Stop at stop signs. Keep within the posted speed limit. Yield right of way. Always. To the public and the Police - you are a biker - a lower life form. We must shed that image to survive.

6. Thou must resist road rage.
Yeah, the moron on the cel phone just cut you off. Get over it. Take a deep breath. Shake your head in disbelief. They probably outweigh you 10:1. They might even have a gun. You will lose.

7. Thou must adapt constantly.
Road conditions. Traffic conditions. Weather. Wildlife. Leaves. Gravel. Bright sun. Bright headlights. Parked cars. Constuction vehicles. Lawn care trucks and trailers parked in your lane. It's all out there waiting to make you a statistic.

8. Thou must keep thine eyes and mind open.
Is this car going to stop/pull out/turn? Where can I go if ___ happens?

9. Thou must remember the brotherhood of two wheels.
If you see a bike, no matter the brand, on the side of the road, stop and offer assistance. We're all in this together. Choppers, Mopeds, Hyabusas, we all face the same hazards, challenges, and legislation. Do what you can to help.

10. Thou must ride as often as possible and enjoy every moment.
This, you will live to relish for the rest of your life, even when your riding years are behind you.

Now go forth and multiply your 2-wheeled mileage......

12. Wear the gear that is required by law in the state you live in. If you choose to not wear the gear cause you can and are willing to take the risks that are incurred based on the comfort you gain...more powere to you. Be free if you choose.

13. Keep a living will and last testament available to your family. The risks of motorcycling can not be overstated. If you ride to the best of your ability you can still find yourself DOA just be being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The risks are greater than those of our cager compatriots. Tell your family you love them each morning cause you never know when this day of riding might be your last.

Kevin.
Notice the title.
Key word "newbies".
Encouraging novice riders to not wear the gear for some myth of "comfort" is asinine.

It took me 3 beers and a half hour to come up with this.

Actually a young friend of mine purhased a used Beemer that he having some front end work done on before he can ride it and he went to great detail to tell me he was going to wear all manner of protective gear. I told him that was fine but advised him not to be judgmental of those who "choose" not to wear all the gear. Most importantly I adivsed him to take the MSF basic course and to do his best to learn to ride his machine in order to lessen the odds of it killing him outright.

Basically I told him he could wear a turqoise and orange iridescent kevlar lined, armored suit and I would respect him but probably laff at his appearance.

The post was advice for newbies Kev.
I could give a rat's what you do.

But many newbies (meaning inexperienced) try to be "cool" and not wear any protective gear.

Your comments have nothing to do with freedom of choice and everything to do with pushing an agenda.
Grow up.

Sorry, Kevin, but Bill's right, it's only "freedom of choice" once you have the skills to choose. Then if you want to be stupid at least it's an informed choice.

I see that a LOT around here. And laughing at the suggestion of taking a safety course.

I think the safety course is a very good idea for anyone who has little or no experience same with wearing gear. Safety course is even a good idea for an experienced dirt rider going for their lic., you get a break on insurance and your lic. test is part of the course. In PA if you take the safety course you can go without a helmet right away.

The most important safety gear is an intelligent head with riding talent inside it.

Ooh! Now THERE'S a strong selling point!

Bet cha forgot that a VERY HIGH percentage of M/C related accidents happen to riders within the first 6 months of their ownership, often even if they HAVE taken the safety course, didn't cha Ian???

(yeah, like I said...."now THERE'S a strong selling point!!!")

Yes, and it wasn't meant as a selling point I actually think it's a bad idea...who said that?

yep, as some of you know, it happened to me a couple of weeks ago and I was almost out of the 6 months

Thanks to my gear I came out with only a pretty badly bruised lt shoulder and a scratched wrist. My helmet had plenty of scratches in the front going from the chin all the way up, the cow hide of my jacket was pretty messed up and my right hand glove had a gash on it... my had didn't have a scratch, the glove took all of it.

I'm a noob, I went to the MSF course, became a statistic but I'm healthy enough to ride another day... thanks to the training and the gear.

Last night around 11:30 AM I headed home from my favorite night spot by my usual route ....across town west and into the Tucson mountains/desert sonoran scrub country....nice warm evening and about three miles from home I rounded out of a tight corner accelerating and lo and behold a deer magically appeared in my headlight beam looking the other way but frozen by the light.

I hit both brakes hard and felt the rear start to lockup and released it...not knowing if the animal would move one way or the other..I came to a stop mere yards in front of the deer who then bolted back into the desert.

Scary ? Yes. I will still wear my usual lack of gear. I am glad that fate gave me the time to get stopped. I still will take my chances and go my own way free and in the wind.

Do as you please and remember the responsibility is yours alone.

Its so funny on these motorcicle forums.....be it this one or any other where the gear vs lack of gear issue comes up....people will not hesitate to make light of or insult the other.

Yet of course when we go on group rides not a one of us would have the nuts to say some of the things that are said in these forums.

I have never had anyone come up and lecture me at a PGR ride due to a lack of a helmet or armored jacket et al..

Likewise on the few RAT rides I have been on not a one has ever accosted me about my lack of a helmet. Likwise I dont make fun of the full helmet armored vest iron man lookalike crowd either.

If someone on a RAT ride did insult me for that reason it would be the last time.

It seems we all have more class in person than we do on the internet no?

Ummm...not necessarily Kev. Just ask anybody who has attended the SWTF the last two years, and I think they'd tell ya that I have relayed my opinion to them about how strongly I feel that those who don't wear helmets aren't usin' all the brain their good lord gave 'em!!!

Why? Because the latter group you mentioned here take the proper precautions? Why WOULD ya?!

I doubt it. You see, when it comes to voicin' my opinion 'bout somethin'(as once again, just ask ANYBODY who attended the SWTF), ESPECIALLY when I have the emperical FACTS to back up my opinion...well...it takes a WHOLE LOT to shut me up!(I'm kind'a like you in this regard, you see...but as I stated, I HAVE THE FRIGGIN' FACTS IN MY FAVOR!!!)

An American is touring Scotland.
He wants to try some of the local genuine single malt, so he goes into a pub and orders it with soda, the bartender
(I don't know if that's what they're called over there, I'm sure I'll find out ) scowls and gets his order.
The man drinks it and is not impressed.
He orders one with water, again, not impressed so he asks for one on the rocks. Still not all it's cracked up to be.
Finally he orders one neat.
The bartender sighs and says "It's aboot time laddie, ya done roont the first three".

Ah! Now while you DO make an excellent point with your droll little story there Bill ol' chum, please allow me the opportunity to put this single malt scotch on the rocks habit of mine in the proper perspective for you by utilizing yet another little story, or perhaps if you will, an analogy! And ironically considering this venue around here, the following will be framed within the subject of motorcycles!

(and of course Mike, you may be interested in this too, ol' chum!)

You see, the storied Triumph Motorcycle Company of jolly old England during all of it's glorious past had never before attempted to manufacture a vertical-twin engined Bonneville, or indeed ANY motorcycle in what might be considered the "American fashion"(in today's lexicon, "a Cruiser"), that is UNTIL those wise fellows at Triumph finally premiered in the model year 2002 what we've all come to know and love as the Bonneville AMERICA.(or just THE "America", since 2003 of course)

Am I correct in this observation, gentlemen? Yes. I believe I AM!

In other words, those said wise fellows running Triumph delivered onto the world stage a way to make a CLASSIC born and bred on that grand island situated off the coast of Europe EVEN BETTER by giving it a distinctive AMERICAN FLAVOR!!!

And so in this same vein, when I add three ICE CUBES to my two fingers of single malt scotch, I am in essence PERFECTING YET ANOTHER CLASSIC by adding those ICE CUBES!!!

Oh and BTW, I assume that both of you gentlemen know why those denizens of said little island always suffered from a scarcity of ice cubes and thus unfortunately were NEVER previously able to perfect in this same manner the consumption of this classic potent potable before, don't you???

Yep! Those poor devils over there ALSO had to contend with a certain Mr. Lucas and his rather poor refrigerator designs for many years, and thus were never allowed THEIR opportunity to enjoy this wonderful elixer in this same perfected manner that all GOOD AMERICANS should now employ!!!

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Well I trust Dwight that in things more important than "Scotch" drinking your comportment and behavior on group rides is likely exemplary is it not?

I trust you do not make snide commments about any rider who showed up at your "fiesta" not wearing a lid?

Or would you now?

If you did that'd be bad behavior now would it not? What is most important in this less than important debate here is that most of the safety geeks on this here August forum would never approach a rider and ridicule his or hers lack of same (helmet) nor his or hers attidude about not wearing "gear"

That flies in the face of good behavior.

Now Kevin, come on! You and I...and GOOD BEHAVIOR???!!!

What the heck has come over you lately???

DUDE!!! YOU and I wouldn't know "good behavior" if it bit us both right square on the you-know-WHAT!!!

And BTW, yeah, I'm pretty sure I made a few comments directly to a few people about the importance of wearing a helmet that weekend. I usually do, no matter where I'm at.

But didn't I tell ya earlier that I have no class, dude?!

(gee...maybe THAT'S why I have no friends EITHER???!!!)

Dwight, the definition of a friend is someone who sees through your act, but still enjoys the show. You've got friends, we're all sitting down here in the first row, eating our popcorn and watching the stage to see what happens next.

Well.....if someone were to even so much as begin to lecture me on the need to wear a helmet on any group ride they would cordially be invited to put a smack on my nether region. The request to kiss that region would be undboubtedly clear and couched in terms that would allow no
misconceptions as to its authenticity.

I would never dream of approaching another rider and suggesting that he or she must wear a helmet. (as long as the law allows it to not be worn)

Anyone who does or would should be prepared for flack from those of us who dont appreciate that.

I can imagine myself approaching a rider sans helmet at the start of a PGR mission and suggesting he or she "needs" to wear a helmet. Its one of those "never gonna happen scenarios"

It would just be bad behavior in and of itself.

Learning to live and let live and to not be judgmental with the non helmet all encompassing non gear wearing crowd is a necessity in a group environment.

MAN Kev!!! This is a whole new side of you I've never seen before!

DECORUM!!!(albeit in the guise of "good behavior")

What's NEXT??? Are you now gonna tell us all that you're thinking for yourself nowdays and that you're not just going to parrot some "party line" from now on, and now maybe possess the ability to MAKE FUN(hint, hint) and maybe size up a little more accurately ALL SIDES OF ANY ARGUMENT???

What's this world coming to, huh folks?!

(and BTW folks...ain't rattlin' cages a whole lot o' fun sometimes?!...you see folks, SOMETIMES it gets people to actually THINK!...as much as they resist the idea, of course!)

There's an awful lot of whining going on in this thread.

"Ma! Ma! They're pickin' on me!"

It's a free GD country. People are free to wear gear or not (within the limits of the law, of course), but that right doesn't preclude other people's exercise of free speech, to comment on it or keep mum, regardless of venue. Stop being such a P.

Have fun Kev! I think you'll find once you get up White Spar Pass on 89 and into Prescott, it's gonna be about in the mid-80s and like...HEAVEN on two wheels for ya!

(as compared of course to "down there in that other place", I mean...Tucson, where it's pushin'...what...100 today?!)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

This is great info for a guy just starting out. Like I mentioned before, my experience comes from dirt bikes. And that was quite a few years ago.
I've been thinking about this for the past few year and I am now getting serious about it. I was searching for newb info and this is exactly what I was looking for.
Is there any other advise that could be given to a beginner?

Only 2 things:

1. Ignore Dwight and Kevin.
2. Use your head.

Riding dirt is a definite plus before riding on the street. But riding on the street is a whole 'nother ballgame. Just think of all the jerks, morons, and idiots you encounter on a daily basis at malls, businesses, work, etc.

They all have driver's licenses. They all get behind the wheel of a 2 ton or better vehicle.... and most of them don't see you.

Ride accordingly.
