Just a thought, but how about havin a section specially for newbies. I've seen the same questions asked again and again by new guys. Which pipes, how do I get the baffles out etc etc. Think it would be good to have a section to give Newbies all the info they need.

The tech vault is great for mechanical info, but it doesn't necessarily address all that a new owner might need to learn.

Plus the new person may need a little more instruction on how and where.

I think the only thing ive found frustrating about this site in my two and a half years here is the rides and events section. You guys over the water have so much going on which is a good thing, that our rallys in the uk or euro rally can often dissapear of the first page overnight. Would be nice to have a seperate link for european events..
Just a thought.

a glossary would have been good for me a couple of years ago...took me a while to figure out what FREAK, AI, TOR etc... meant.

A geographical breakdown of rides and events isn't a bad idea.

I also think the glossary for newbies is also a great idea. You could add UNI, BB, igniter, drilled slides, and a bunch of other terms thrown around the site.

Hey guys, do the yanks have a separate link? All they do have over us is weather and the low cost of fuel! I'm game for a meet virtually anywhere that doesn't involve more than 20mins on a motorway lol. We know the weather here is crap, so let's just get on with it. Wake up people!

You need to rejet, then torque down the Johnston rods. Shame that you got a newbie - big hassle getting rid of 'em.

Americas and Speedmasters for Dummies?

Those books are good to a point, but they become dated rather quickly.

Over the past 5-6 years the moderators and the members have compiled a wealth of information on here. Sometimes a search or an hour or so of tech vaulting will supply the info you need. If that doesn't yield what you're looking for, by all means ask...
Just keep in mind that mechanically, what works for some may not give you the results you're looking for, and for everything else, it's all a matter of opinion.

Newbie section ? When I joined my with first post I asked the exact same questions that have been asked probably over 4000 times. But in that way I was welcomed and not made to feel like a complete waste of space. Nobody disparaged me or insulted me as has been done on other forums.

Please allow the newbies to ask the same questions. Its a great ice breaker it lets them know that you guys are a great repository for information and also willing to share your experiences. This site with all the members, helps my overall experience of riding to be far more complete. I have shared in some of the rides others have taken. I have shared in family problems, crises and successes. I have watched bikes being changed modified improved and personalised. I have friends all over the world although we have never met and may never meet I have an extended family of TBA riders. Any of whom I can call on for advice or support. This is freely given with quid quo pro. Like all families we have our spats but to date I have not seen anything approaching the vitriolic spoutings on some other sites.

To every body here all us newbies owe agreat vote of thanks. Becuse of you all. I have done some mods.Spent a ****** load of cash with Tribal customs and some with Eddy some Brent. I also have been able to get work carried out by Triumph under warranty.

Guys thanks a lot for all your assistance.

Excellent points. I was also going to point out the tech vault. There ARE some basics in there, plus we could add a thread FOR newbies in the tech vault, but all the basic stuff is there, just not in one single spot. But if we start making special stuff for newbies, then we have a LOT of redundancy. A newbie should look at the "using the tech vault" stuff, and go from there. Then ask questions! Most introduce themselves anyway.

Another thought, if we create a newbie section, some stuff may get ignored by the veterans, so their question may go unanswered. I think it's workin great now, just don't be affraid to speak up! Personally, I'd probably direct/remind people to do a search, but others will directly answer questions

People assume that asking questions is a bad thing, even "the same old questions." This site seems free but there is a price: interaction. We will share information with you but we want you to join the community. That said, the truly anti-social can find 99% of the answers with enough diligence.

I for one never want to see this site become the kind of place where a newbie is ridiculed or ignored for asking a question that's been asked a million times. That doesn't mean the old timers need to be at the beck and call of newbies. I haven't answered a question about AI removal or K&N pod filters in years. There are plenty of new-ish members who are willing to step up and share what they've learned, and in turn the old timers can fact-check them.

To ignore or ridicule newbies would be a death-knell for this site.... moderators are another story however..

I have one caveat for newbies though, don't take any 1 post or recommendation you read on here as gospel. Again, what works for one may not suit what you're trying to accomplish. Do your research and ask if you're still not sure.
What works for a 150 lb guy in Florida riding solo may not be best for a 400 lb couple riding 2 up in Alaska....

I'm still a Newbie, not just to bikes but also to Forums like this one. It ain't easy bein green! The people here are all very welcoming and very very patient. Just wish things were a bit easier to find.

As for the seperate geographic stuff, good idea as long as we don't go our seperate ways. I fully intend lookin up some of my brother TBA riders next time I'm in the USA. Lot of those guys have a lot more spanner time under their belts and aren't afraid to try new stuff.

Would like to see a section for riders going to or from other countries where they can hook up with locals.

But hey, when al's said and done, this is a great site!

I found that too, when I was a newbie. It's just practice.

It'll happen. I hired a Speedie in Oz last year. I stopped at Matt (Sandmann)'s house near Brisbane and met Stweart (SRS) and his incredablypermacleanAmerica and some of their riding buddies. They thought I was gonna ride like a girl...... I don't do over 1000k's in a country I've never ridden in before and then ride like a girl.... But all nice guys.
And all that was cos I said I was hiring a bike and wanted to see some of Oz.

Finding stuff on any site is always tricky. Getting a feel for the search function can be tricky. Others are MUCH better at it than me, like adding a "+XXX" to something can really narrow down the search. There's a "searching tips" thread somewhere with some awesome suggestions.

As for the geographical stuff, on another forum I belong to, they strongly reccomend putting your basic location in the SUBJECT line of a classified. Like "Saddlebags FS, NY" or whatever. I think that should apply to the rides section too!

I also think people could calm down on the number of threads for the GA rally 6 or 7 should do it! Kinda kidding there, but I do feel the UK guys' pain about getting bumped. I will say, check back more frequently when something big is approaching, maybe even JUST to read the rides section ya know?
