Just looking for some people out there with stories of how they may have painted their pipes with high temp paint. I have some cheap slip-ons that I don't mind experimenting with, and I'd like to know how some of you went about preparing, painting, and what the results were. Thanks!

I painted the pipes on my old ironhead. Didn't take long for the paint to start burning off. A friend tried powder coating his. That lasted maybe a year before they started fading and lost the shine. Ceramic coating is the way to go if you can do it.

My friend used to paint his pipes with BBQ black out of foo foo cans. It holds up pretty well and is cheap. Have to respray from time to time but thats every few years.

I started with high temp powdercoat, then topped with bbq paint. It's still on there, but doesn't look great.

Jet-Hot gave me an estimate for $130 to satin-black ceramic-coat a pair of D&Ds (minus tips and heat shields). That included stripping off the chrome. Price was based on the length of the pipes.

That doesn't sound like a bad deal including stripping the chrome.

bead or sand blaster would be best or wet sand probably next best.

I have a guy in MA who charges $10 per foot to ceramic coat pipes includes prep but I always do my own. Bead blast then sand in gradual increments to 220 grit. Once coated they can be buffed with aluminum polish. You'll be real happy. Just google ceramic coaters within a 25 mi radius of your castle, you might be surprised how many places do it.

Do you know the total price for a pair of headers and how long it would take to turn them around?

I agree can't argue with $10 a foot with prep included! I wouldn't bother with a spray can at that price.

Just painted my slip-on Emgos earlier this season -- used the DEI hi-temp flat black, and it's holding up pretty well thus far. Only a couple months old, so too soon to tell too much -- will say this, tho - for the cost, if I have to touch up every so often or once a year, so what?

I used New England Industrial Coatings in Worcester, MA. Bob, Scott and the guys are real cool and reasonable. They also ceramic coated my brackets etc. for a Harley I did over the winter. I made the mistake of telling them no rush,(it was winter) so they didn't. When I called and said : hey, I need them, they banged 'em out. I would always look for a spare set to have done if it was my only bike; 0 down time.

Good to know! My headers are looking particularly hideous. Would the prep they do fix that before coating?

PJ1 is the best down pipe paint I've tried, make sure you wet 'n dry your pipes to scour the remaining chrome and get a smooth non-shiny finish, also don't forget to clean with carb cleaner or the like to remove greasy finger prints. Then two coats with two hours between, when dry, pipes back on your bike and go for a blast to bake it on. The PJ1 Satin Black is also excellent for engine cases and silencers, same procedure but once painted and dry, put in the oven at 100c for half an hour, lovely job.
