I made a spacer to move mine back about an inch cause I moved the foot bar forward about an inch. Wanted to keep it out of the header.

You can move it.I did mid-mount controls so I mounted the rear mastercylinder below the seat on the right side.

I think what Scott is asking is if anyone has changed the stock master cylinder to an aftermarket jobbie.
As a slight aside, but related: is the location of a master cylinder critical? Does it have to be a certain height above something (the ground, the brake itself)? Does it need to be kept cool?
Cheers, Neill.

Kept cool to a certain extent yes, that's why they make different grade fluids, (one reason anyway) the rest the answer is basicly no, You could mount an after market HD chrome one where it would go on a Hardley and it would work just fine as long as it pushes enough fluid to operate the break.

Not exactly Ian. You may recall that Triumph issued a recall for this item a few years ago when it was discovered that on the first few years of the BA and Speedy models whenever there was a tip-over or anytime the bike fell on it's left side especially, that the rear brake reserviour ended up below the height of the master-cylinder, and when righted and later ridden, gravity had starved the master-cylinder of brake fluid and there would not be any rear brake accuation at all.
And thus, the recall issued was to raise the reserviour above the master-cylinder at all times, even when the bike is tipped over, and unfortunately the outcome is also that said resevouir is more pronounced in appearance.
(and here's something I can't figure out...WHY would anyone put one of those chrome covers on that thing and further draw attention to it???....somebody PLEASE explain that to me???!!!)

Yes but the master cyl. I am talking about are more like the one we have for the front, the res. is part of the cyl. not remote. The recall on ours is due to the remote res. allowing an air bubble in the line to the cyl. I also know there are those who didn't do the recall and have no problems with it.

Yep! I see. The Triumph master-cylinder really isn't all that unsightly, it's that remote reserviour which does. And, the Harley brake master-cylinder and reservoir is all one unit, which definitely does look a whole lot better, alright. I agree.

I minused the recall bracket and went with the Kury kit for VTX 1300. Location is much improved. Kury setup has a separate plated cap, so the cover doesn't have to come off to check/add fluid. I think you'd have to lay it down with the tank in a ditch to get air in the cylinder.
Said Molly to James, that's a fine motorbike.

Well you chromo-holic America owners do some strange things to your bikes, and this is just another one of them. It ranks right up there with putting a big chrome hoop on the front front fender for the speedo cable. Some of you America owners just need a 12 step program to cure you of this obsessive chrome addiction.

I have chrome tubes in my tires. You can't see 'em but I know they're there.

There is a old saying Chrome won't get you home. Meaning your money is better spent on other things.
Back to the MC question. the master-cylinder and the reserviour are the least impressive parts on our bikes. If Hardley Davidsons have nice lookin rear brake bits we should have some options too.

that a little better for the res.
but the whole MC lower foot control area and the res. are still light ages behind the curve
I'll check out jap set ups and write back if modern technology and craftsmanship hits a bench mark

In my earlier post, I mentioned the master cylinder when, in fact, I should have said brake fluid reservoir. Just out of curiosity, would it be possible to use a simple tube to act as the reservoir?
Remove the current reservoir and connecting tube. Take a new, longer tube and run it up the frame. Fill it then cap it.
Obviously, you'd have to ensure it had the same capacity as the original. Use clear tube so you can see the level of the fluid or, if you were so inclined, wrap the tube in a braided sheathe to disguise it. (With a lil cutout so you can check the levels.)

Good question. You'd loose the bladder that's in the cap. How important is that? Dunno. Plenty of 'em have been made without it.

I have just posted a photo of the small rizoma reservoir that I fitted today, see accessories section photo of rizoma rear brake reservoir fitted. It looks excellent and does not need a stone guard like the original. Have a look, I am sure that there must be planty of other items out there. Texasbrit
