With the exception of Arco, I am not sure we have any of those other stations out here. Where does 76 fall on your list? We have a ton of those around.

All of this information is available from the Department of Energy and each is required to state where they get their oil and how much they are importing.

I avoid Citco like the plague and have ever since I found out it was Hugos oil. I have been buying Hess and BP when ever possible since they don't use middle east oil , didn't know about the others. This being said I have yet to open and read Erwins link.

Without any facts to back it up, I have read that the distribution infrastructure has no way to segregate where the final product comes from. In other words, what comes out of the pipelines from the refineries could have come from anywhere...... So we have little choice in supporting or avoiding the actual source of our fuel.

I know what you mean. There are a few stations I try to stay away from but for the most part I dont mind paying the extra 4 or 5 cents when filling my bike but I must be honest, I try to find the cheapest price when filling my 40 gal Suburban or my 60 gal motorhome.

Brokered energy vs. buying on the spot market is the difference. When Sun Oil company bought DX in south Texas then became SunDX and later just Sun they put in place direct purchase of oil. They don't go through the pool. They also drill their own. Sun Shipping moves their oil for them. The tankers do regular routes from Texas and around to Ca. They don't buy from the middle east. However, in the 80s DX did get oil from Saudi. The Saudi oil is not just oil. It is low sulfur, very high end, oil. That oil took less energy and fewer processes to refine and came out to a much higher standard. That oil for many years was earmarked for Sears. It was refined and canned in Marcus Hook Pa.. They may still be doing that. I worked summers at the refinery when in college, so learned some or most of this from osmosis. Old man Pew when he was in charge of Sun Oil asserted that dependence on foreign oil would be the end of our economy. He is more famous for founding the Pew Foundation than being the CEO of Sun Oil. So at 20 gallons that works out to .80 cents

Sunoco is the "official fuel of NASCAR", dosen't that warrant buying it no matter what it costs?

I try not to buy Citgo (because of Chavez) unless it's the only option. Otherwise, I usually buy EXXON gas.
Other than for CITGO, I don't have a 'Good oil company/Bad oil company' viewpoint. If you think OPEC or 'Middle East oil companies' are entirely to blame for the recent spike in prices, keep in mind that oil is traded as a commodity and is in good part affected by speculation as it is by the basics of supply and demand economics. With India, China, and Eastern Europe all having an increased demand on the supply available for purchase, boycotting oil companies which buy their supplies from Middle East producers will have absolutely zero impact on either supply or on price.

Not according to that Snopes list but I have no real knowlege of where any of the oil comes from. All I can do is weigh the info I see against the source and try and make an informed decision.

Oil is a commodity, it really doesn’t matter where it comes from. I avoid CITCO because I can’t stand the idea of subsidizing Hugo’s retail side. I think of the oil market as an ocean into which oil is pumped and from which we all draw our energy. We can affect retailers but the producers are tough to get to.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

The more I think about it, the more it seems to make sense to follow the lead of Japan.inc and use up the other guy's resources first. I forget just where I saw it, some obscure book or film, but some fictional politician was talking about the occupants of the middle east. "Most people think that 100 years ago, you were a bunch of nomads wandering around the desert cutting off each others heads. They also think that's how it will be 100 years after the oil runs out."
Let's hope there's intelligent life somewhere in space 'cause it's buggar all down here. -- Monte Python

I'm always curious how the branding works in our little neighborhood since the same local oil distributor's truck refills of all the stations (except Jet-Pep) around here regardless of "brand badge".

Distribution is one of the many reasons for the pump price being so high. 'PPB' aside, our governments have (IMHO) unnecessarily mandated certain formulations be refined by region and by season which adds to the cost to produce and distribute a gallon of gas to the various regions which each require a different formulation. Truth be told, distribution of gasoline in the USA is so logistically complicated as to be unexplainable. I would be curious to know if different countries in other continents require different formulations from each other or within regions of their countries as we do in our single country.
