Anther rainy day (with tornado sirens) so my curious mind wants to know . . . if you listen to music when you ride, what do you listen to? I have an iPod, but I never seem to take it on rides. Maybe I will one day.
I would be unstoppable if not for law enforcement and physics.

Sorry, but at the moment we are bathed in glorious sunshine and 27 (approx mid 80's). I can't use my iPod with my full face helmets but today, I used a half helmet I bought in the States in '06. Between working, I managed a couple of hours on the bike ... random from a few Hendrix albums going out, random mix of a couple of Kings of Leon riding home. Difficult to say what 'I like' but my iPod has, I think, 15+ genres! How's that work?? There's even one genre called mash up??? I like rock, classical, country, jazz, blues, 70's / 80's, bluegrass ..... ok, pretty much anyhting but fingerintheear folk. I can see now I managed to get so many genres on there

Yes, I do. My MP3 player has about 1500 song on it. Most of it is 80's punk, new wave and Christian alternative.

I listen to the thumping of the pipes, the roar of the wind and the hum of the tires.

What? Did they forget the words?
FM radio, classic rock and country.... until the commercials get to me. Then it's the tires humming along with the pipes.....

But, what do I know?

+1 Which is funny, cause I love tunes in the car. But on the bike, I have no desire to listen to tunes.

Why?
The Sceptres sound great. To get away, its to get away from everything.
My IPOD has 11,500 songs on it, and I'm not done downloading my cd collection yet ( I still have plenty of room for a lot more ).

I don't listen to music on the bike. I may sound like a prude, but I think you need to listen for things happening around you, to be prepared to react to a potential hazard/emergency.

Only music I listen to when I ride is the sound of my pipes....and the tune that runs through my head.

I tried my I-Pod once, the volumne over my BUBs was enough to make my ears ring for half a day. So know I just enjoy the sounds of the Bonnie, and enjoy my music when I relax at the destination with my favorite adult beverage. Heres to Harmony when you Ride. HABU BOB

I broke the iPod out once for a ride and listened to a lot of 70s rock/southern rock. It was a really good ride. However I found myself constantly focusing on the music and never really had a chance to relax. Haven't grabbed the iPod and my helmet at the same time since. Maybe on a day+ trip I might, but anything shorter it needs to be the motor and the road.
BTW, Gooseman, it's nice to see someone else that has appreciation for The Donnas.

I do, most of the time.
And for all those who disagree I find it concentrates my mind. It may be my classical music and orchestral training, I dunno, as with that we have to be able to listen to about 4 things at once, look at the music and the conductor, and remember what my hands are supposed to be doing...all at the same time!
At the mo, I'm listening to the first INXS album with JD Fortune on it, but I've just downloaded the new Def Leppard album...so that'll be on on the way to work, and at work!
And even with my Davida Lid, it cuts enough noise out for me to not have the volume more than half volume, and I still hear the sirens of emergency vehicles. And the bike.

I find it to distracting
Unless, I am just riding around town, I find it distracting not to, especially if I am riding for several hours at a time. The constant drone of the road and the constant sound of my pipes gets annoying after a while. I do keep the volume low enough that I can hear what is going on around me.

On motorways Creed, Nine, Inch Nails anythink rocky/punky. On the twisties nothing I need to concentrate on the road and whats happening around me. I would be wary on the roads that require a lot of work being distracted by anything. We use our 6 senses and reducing any one of them can be enough to cause problems.
Before any body comments we have 5 senses I firmly believe we have an inate 6th sense its not always accurate but how often have we all had that "feeling" and its turned out to be spot on and saved us some serious grief.

I agree with Gina. I have taken the ipod on my last 3 rides over 200 miles, and I find that it keeps me more alert to what is happening around me. I'll listen to jazz, country, bluegrass, folk, classic rock, some alternative.

Like some others that have posted....I listen to my surroundings. I do have a bike to bike / passenger device. I'll talk to my passenger or to the other bikers I ride with. When I am by myself....only listen to me, myself, and I.
However, I do have a cell connected to my communication device that I have used a few times. Mostly when I call my wife to le her know I'll be very late. Some days are just meant for riding!!!!

Well, I WOULD listen to music while I ride, but those voices in my head couldn't carry a friggin' tune even if they had a bucket to carry it in!!! (...especially the one that sounds just like Gilbert Gottfried!!!) Okay, sorry...no I don't.(listen to an Ipod, that is) I, like a few others around here, feel it may be too much of a distraction.
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Basically it's one of the few times I actually get to listen to music at the volume it's meant to be played rather than have the wife moan about all that "awful" heavy metal.

I think it really depends on if you are the kind of person who gets distracted by music, or the kind (like me) that finds it helps them concentrate. In school I HAD to have something playin, TV or music, to do my homework, or else my mind wandered too much. Probly some weird strain of ADD.
Also, anyone who finds they have to turn it up to loud should check out the thread in Riding Gear about earphones!

I'm lucky in that respect, we're both right into our metal Not so much since the little fella's come along mind, thats kind of put a stop to much anything above 20 db...hence also a lot of music equipment unfortunately laying redundant at the moment. Thinking MP3s and riding could be the way forward!
