Oh, we are! ... we are!
BT, will you have this bike dynoed at some point? My bet is it rumbles first time round and will just require minor adjustments. Good luck!

Mr. Bedouin, You're right when you say "failure is not an option." But, - you lost that Gentleman's bet about it "rumbling at first."
The second gas touched the combustion chamber it started-up and commenced "purring like a kitten."
I'm quite pleased.
I did take the "Quicktime" movie of that first start, but it's 11 megabits. Since I only have a low speed modem here at home, it won't be up for another hour.
Anyway, "victory is mine" (too bad there's snow on the ground)!

For those of you with broadband (of whatever variety), here is that "Quicktime" .MOV file I said I'd post of the initial start-up (right-hand mouse-click, then choose "Save Target As," then save to your disk). Be warned, it's over 11 megs. -BT

Hey BT, Congrats on your bike! You have done a very impressive job! Mine comes back from having the same mechanical work done Tuesday. I had the cams in before tho. This was my first stop to see how you did today when I got home from work. I have been watching closely and saw you were aiming for today to fire. I have done a number of 4 x 4 motors and had all of them fire first time. Nothing like doing the work and hearing it fire. Feel bad for you that you got snow tho. I think that would be pretty da*n hard to get it running and have snow on the ground. I would have to start it like every ten minutes, but that can't be good for it. Probably harder for you now than the whole thing........ sorry. Vic
Have a nice day , "unless you've made other plans"

Congrats BT. Job well done and she looks beautiful. It's too bad you can't take her out now, this winter is going to be hardest of all on you.

BT,
Excellent job ... congratulations! I saw the movie clip too. Too bad the weather will not allow you to enjoy your victory and test the results of your work. Excuse me for my wording, by "rumbling first time round" I meant rumbling into life ... first time around. I had no doubt as you were apparently very methodical all the way through.
Enjoy!
Bedouin.

10 thumbs up buddy! A job well done! Now you have to find some queludes or something to get rid of those frozen face grinnin muscles. It will take awhile, but the grin will subside slightly as you put more and more miles on her. It will never go away completely though. And be sure to wear some "Depends" when you take her out for the first ride, you'll need em. Atta boy!
A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice.

Congrats Mark. After some of the problems you've had, I'd have been jumping for joy instead of just giving a nonchalant thumbs up when she fired up. Must be a bit furstrating not being able to ride the bike right away after all that work.
Keep us posted on the break-in and your dyno run...if you get one done.

kennymc, I am starting another project. But it has very little to do with BA.com. So I won't be starting a thread. But, I just got back from purchasing a ... ... 1971 VW Bug chassis. After I completely refurbish it to brand new condition, I'm going to ... ... build this Porsche 356 Speedster replica on it. (My wife gave me the "go ahead.") But, before I start that, I got to go organize my garage. Hey Pat, see what you started! -BT

Well, I thought I'd make a last commentary about my impressions of what the motorcycle feels like after riding it for the first time. First of all, after twisting the throttle for the first time on dry pavement, I dukied my pants! Then, my first impression was...
THIS THING IS UN-FRIGGIN-BELIEVABLE!
So, other than really, really fast acceleration, it seemed like my same old "Bumble-Bee Bonnie."
Happy New Year, & over and out,

PS - Dyno numbers will be posted within a couple weeks.

Thanks for bringing this back up Ray, it was like a book-of-the-month-club premium edition, what a great read!

I think what is really good BT, admits he's no mechanic and you can see that as you read through this thread, but following Pat's instructions he has made a terrific job of it and is fully detailed. Maybe this should have a sticky on it so it stays up to encourage others.

It certainly has made me re-examine the big bore concept...BT should write his own How-To book from this and get Brent to sell it with the kits.

Sandman (Matt) had a good write up on it with a nice splash of humor on his site.
EDIT: I was just on his site and didn't see it there anymore. Might have missed it but don't see how.

I reckon that's a great idea Ed. I for one just love reading and seeing pictures of this stuff cos like a lot of blokes I see myself doing something like that in the future. It's all about having the right info to steer you along though and why go through all the doubt and heartache when the wheels already been invented. Yep, a blow by blow description with pictures would be worth a fair bit of money I believe. I'd buy it anyway
