 Kids riding gear

Ok after meeting some people, and hearing all the rally tales, my son has decided that he really wants to ride! Given that, and the fact that it is a great chance for some Father/Son time, I'm thinking of a few different options...but finding Riding gear for kids is dam-near-impossible Particularly street gear! So here is my question(s)
1. What did/do you use? Off road kit???
2. Given the growth rate of kids...who has any thay their little ones out grew...My son is a size 11-12 boys (helmet and gloves I may have to deal with here)
I hate to spend a frikkin fortune on kit only to have him out grow it...and if you did...here is a chance to recoupe some $$$ perhaps

My son is 10 at the moment. I bought him his jacket and trousers from a bike show. Cost me £50 ($100), but it's always cheaper at shows. So, imo, going the off-road route would be the way to go as he's already growing out of the gear I got him in December. Trust me, the expense is worth the peace of mind when your sons on the back and is GREAT for father-son bonding. I'm off to the Thundersprint with my son this weekend, he's looking forward to the time on the bike more than the rally

Growing up I had an adult sized helmet but didn't spend much time wearing it.
I learned all I need to know about life by killing smart people and eating their brains.

My point was I answered the question asked, I told him what I used.

If you "didn't spend much time wearing it".....How exactly was your answer relevant or helpful?

Although I see how you might have read that I was looking for what you might have used...I was asking what you used for your kids when they rode...I also shed my bucket often when I was riding solo (and young and foolish)...I do not want my son helmetless behind me (not to mention it's highly illegal in most states)

It was relevant because I was answering what I did as a kid as was asked. Just have to look for a small enough helmet.
That is the last time I will justify myself to you, I have done it before you are not my GD keeper what ever you may think.
EDIT: sorry Rob I meant to be helpful and was thinking he was going to be learning on his own dirt bike not on the road riding behind you.
EDIT EDIT: I also would never suggest you take your son out on your bike without a helmet or proper riding gear.

I did find that the off-road/moto cross gear was cheaper and serves the same purpose. Any gear is better than nowt. It's not as if your gonna be ridin' your bike like you stole it with your son on the back.

I won't??? ...I meen I won't !! of course I won't!! yeah with the one exception of a site called http://www.cruisinclothes4kids.com/I found no street gear at all...off road is it I guess...and as you said any gear is better than none....I was just surprised that most of the off road stuff lacks armor as part of the gear....

I bit the bullet and bought all three of mine their own helmet. All are various ages and sizes and wanted them to have the right fit for helmet. Also went full face helmet route. Hate to have them live with a busted face for their life. They generally wear the same garb as I would - over ankle boots, jeans, long sleeve jacket (denim) or otherwise. There are some kids apparel sites out there. I have not gone all the way to armor.
