A lot of motorcyclists put a little bell on their bikes to ward off the road gremlins. Rumor is that it is more powerful if it is given to you instead of purchased.

I do have one, as it was given to me, but it makes you think, someone came up w/ a simple idea and got hundreds of thousands of people to buy into it and probably made a killin' off pure superstition.

I keep mine tied to one of the mounts from the stock oil radiator, with the tube oil coolers it leaves those open

Found interesting gremlin bell history on another site: "The gremlin bell thing started in the 50's here in Central Calif. by Armenian bikers. The story is that the ringing wards off evil road demons. When your riding down the road the demons cover their ears to stop the noise and fall off. Supposed to keep ya safe when on the road. The Armenians used to put them on their carts and carraiges in the way old days to get them to and from safely and guard against road agents. Its old Armenian folk stuff. This area is heavily populated with Armenians. I remember seeing these bells on bikes back in the mid 60's but it all got started on the 50's. It is an almost universal thing worldwide now. Check out bikes from Europe and Asia and you will see them on a lot of those bikes also. The bells must be given to you by another person to work, so the legend goes. I am a bit superstitious but I have them on all of my bikes out of respect for the many older Armenian bikers that still hang out around Fresno. I believe ER did a big story on this and its origination a couple of years ago and their version was almost word for word what I have always heard around these parts."

A buddy of mine dumped his $24K Road King (very pretty bike) the day after being given one of those.

I think they summon Gremlins to the bike.

No "Tom" Foolery for me.

Yeah , Lola had one of tha things hanging on her rear , ran over a big firewood gremlin , busted my wheel and tire . The back of the bike bucked up so hard it tore the bell right off . Analyze that .

I gotta get her another bell , maybe a handlebar bell . Ching ching .

All in an afternoon, I dumped my bike a few blocks from home, went to see the Wild Hogs movie, and when we got home there was a bell hanging from my mailbox a buddy had left for me.
So I promptly attached it to my bike.

Yep! Isn't there something in the lore about the bell should be put on by someone who cares for you?

Mine went missing when I wrecked last year. Dont know if it came off durring the crash or when the wrecker
hauled the bike off, or when my son had it brought home for.Didnt notice it gone until the insurance guy came to do the damage assessment. Hasnt been replaced yet.

Hardly any Gremlins around here, mostly SUV's and Minivans. They don't hear 115db horns and 130db cuss words so I doubt they'd hear an itty-bitty bell...

A friend of mine gave me mine, so I had an L-shaped bracket made up that clamps around the 2 horizontal tubes that the footpegs are bolted to, and it hangs out in the air between those tubes and the front fender. Stays nice and clean that way!

A woman I work with brought bells back from Peru when she went to visit there and gave them to everyone in the office. I wonder if it will work since it is not a "gremlin" bell? I never got a good explanation as to why they were given, I guess it is a custom there...

This is a pagan ritual, which I refuse indulge in!!!

(okay, the REAL reason I don't have one of these things is because I have a STRICT RULE about there only being ONE ding-a-ling on my bike at a time...and that's ME already!!!)

Maybe this weekend.
