Found interesting gremlin bell history on another site: "The gremlin bell thing started in the 50's here in Central Calif. by Armenian bikers. The story is that the ringing wards off evil road demons. When your riding down the road the demons cover their ears to stop the noise and fall off. Supposed to keep ya safe when on the road. The Armenians used to put them on their carts and carraiges in the way old days to get them to and from safely and guard against road agents. Its old Armenian folk stuff. This area is heavily populated with Armenians. I remember seeing these bells on bikes back in the mid 60's but it all got started on the 50's. It is an almost universal thing worldwide now. Check out bikes from Europe and Asia and you will see them on a lot of those bikes also. The bells must be given to you by another person to work, so the legend goes. I am a bit superstitious but I have them on all of my bikes out of respect for the many older Armenian bikers that still hang out around Fresno. I believe ER did a big story on this and its origination a couple of years ago and their version was almost word for word what I have always heard around these parts."
