I'm watching the Great Escape on the AMC channel and I suddenly realized just why they used a Triumph disguised as a German bike. What else but a 650 Triumph could you crash, pull out of the brush and ride halfway across the country on whatever fuel was in the tank? And then jump it over a 10 foot fence?

I saw it again last night, too. Kept telling my wife "Look!", "Thats a Triumph!", "Watch this part!", "Thats not a stuntman!", etc.
She just doesn't get it.

Yep rented it a few weeks ago and was saying all the same stuff to Wendy but Wendy does get it. She liked the flick too. She loves old movies I borrowed 2 anothers from my mom that are really good if ya get a chance to see them. One is a Humphrey Bogart flick We're No Angels , very funny and the other is a Danny Kaye flick The Court Jester also very funny.
EDIT: In We're No Angels ya gotta love the pet poisonous snake named Adolph. It takes place on Devils Island.

Yep GB. Word was that Bud Ekins told John Sturges that there was NO WAY he was jumpin' a friggin' BMW over that wire fence, even if those "barbs" on it WERE made of rubber.(which they were, BTW)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Good old Bud Ekins . . . miss him, he was a real character! (I used to buy parts off of him)

I LOVE that movie. One of the best WWII movies for sure. So many great characters in it too! Jim Rockford there, what's his name. That guy can deliver a line! I also like the Dirty Dozen.

I'd run into him at some of the vintage bike shows and swap meets around SoCal myself, Cynthia. Always seemed like a great guy alright.
Just a few months ago, a few of my friends and I went to a celebration of his life that was held at the Warner Bros. studio in Burbank. There was a short film about him shown inside the studio's theatre, and outside where the refreshments were located there was a recreation of this bike we're talkin' about in this thread, along with a couple of Bullitt Mustang recreations.

To name just a few. This is a movie with a truly 'All Star' cast.
If you like this movie then I highly recomend that you go buy the Two Disc Special Edition Collectors Set of this movie. Disc one is the full movie. Disc two has lots of extras which includes "The Great Escape. The Untold Story" documentry. This has lots of interviews with surviving POWs who were involved in tunnel digging. Listening to their stories will bring a tear to any grown mans eyes. It did me.

I bought the movie for like $7 bucks at Best Buy a few years ago and literally like a month later the special edition came out... Haven't gotten it yet, but I may have to.
Another GREAT special edition DVD to get/watch is the MASH movie!

The movies insurance company would not let McQueen make the jump but McQueen did double as German soldiers chasing him
because of a lack of stunt riders back then

It seems most of the bikes the germans were riding in the film were triumphs. Since when do the Germans ride british bikes?
