The son and heir took his Ducati 999 in for a service. I got a call from the workshop and the guy said "I've got some bad news about your bike". I said "it's my son's not mine". "Good" he said, "you can tell him his sub-frame has fractured and replacement is about £750 fitted + tax". He said "Let me make a 'phone call, I'll call you back." About an hour later he called back and said "I called Ducati and their records show that the bike is 2 years out of warranty. However, due to the nature of the failure they are prepared to supply the part free of charge and pay for the fitting. They said that they would like, with my sons permission, to take the failed sub-frame back to the factory for tests. They also pointed out that the replacement frame was an up-rated version of the original. The bike was valeted and superbly presented when he picked it up. Now THAT'S what I call service
If you do it today you MIGHT regret it. If you CAN'T do it tomorrow you WILL regret it.

From some experiences I've read here, when some of us have had problems Triumph's answer was Frigg Off - or something similar. My mistake HOW CRAP IT WAS OF DUCATI AND THEIR DEALER ! I spit in their eye............

Certainly good of Ducati and the dealer...Im glad your son got his bike fixed.
It woudl also certanily be bad press for Ducati if the owner decided to make it known that the frame on that expensive Ducati was deffective. It would also behoove Ducati to kiss the royal ****** of any customer whose bike might have a deffective frame.
None the less...great service and by the sounds of it a decent dealer!

under warranty but what about 2 years out of warranty or the break rotors or the starter idler gear problem. The latter they seem to be covering but for how long?

I'm glad to hear this had a happy ending, Michael. This is excellent service from Ducati.
But, I don't think I'm being naive here when I say that I think Triumph probably would also make the very same decision to cover the cost of repairs in the event of a frame failure of any sort, as long as said frame hadn't been modified through either accident or intent.
However, I doubt even that highly regarded italian firm would feel compelled to replace a C.D.I.unit or a blown out airbox, due mainly to the fact that the latter incident might have been caused(but of course, not necessarily so) by some form of miss-adjustments on the carburators or F.I. unit performed by some unskilled technician or owner, and the former is an electronic unit which are always subject to some form of failure and which is seldomly if ever covered by any vehicle manufacturers once the waranty on the vehicle has expired.

Notice if you will how I so strategically gave myself "an out" there Michael when I said "but of course, not necessarily so" in the above. (and so....DOWN GINA, DOWN!!!...DON'T KILL ME!!!...PLEASE!!!)

The Z3 series BMW's have issues with their sub-frames coming unwelded. The spot welds at the rear of the car in the trunk and just above the rear axle separate on about 20 - 25% of these cars, because these welds break under the dynamic stresses of driving. The fix is somewhat expensive, needless to say, and to date, BMW has never acknowledged that this obvious design and manufacturing defect even exists in spite of numerous complaints and evidence up the kazoo. My own car, knock on wood, is so far unaffected, but I inspect this area often just in case. A class action lawsuit is being discussed amongst Z3 series owners, but I haven't heard much lately about how far it's progressed.
So, dear friends, Triumph appears not to be the only company not to pony up to their responsibilities - in my opinion.

Yes they did. Both times. Though the second one....I wasn't even in the country....it was while they were investigating the spluttering. So if Triumph hadn't had done it, the dealer wouild have had to.
But they won't replace the tank on the 03, as the paint inside is peeling. However due to the circumstances of her, I'm a) not surprised and b) not complaining.
