Hello again, Sorry if I'm going over the same subject again but.... I'm deciding on what to do with my pipes. I was gonna get TORS then Bubs now I'm leaning towards gutting the stocks. The sound clips on line all sound alike to me. The only ones I've heard in person are short TORS and I thought they were rather quiet. Now I know this is a little silly asking people to describe sound, but, Which is louder, TORS or stockers with one baffle out? I think I read here that stockers with all baffles out are about as loud as Bubs and Scepters? I don't see any Triumphs around here, I'm about it!

I like my Specialty Spares long shots with the baffle material removed, but the baffle housing still in the pipe to add a bit of back pressure. Sounds mean! Love it!

TORs are louder than stock by quite a but under acceleration not much at idle. I had the short TORs on mine for a short time. Gutted stock and Scepters are close I thought gutted stock were just slightly louder. The Scepters I heard were on my friends bike and they are the pretty much straight through type. The gutted stock pipes both have all the baffles out with just the reducer cone left in for back pressure. I had a set of Chevy605s pipes one Wendys bike for a day and they were much quieter with only 1 baffle left in and that had 3 holes drilled in it. Don't listen to him on the jetting, his ad says no jetting needed but trust me it needs it. I wouldn't think stock pipes with 1 baffle out would be as loud as TORs depending on what style TOR ya get some are straight through some are not. I haven't heard a set that are not in person yet.

Hi, new guy here, first post, been lurking for awhile. I've had long TORS for about 1 month now on my '05 America (which I've only had for 2 months). The local dealership actually talked me out of Bubs (which along with TORS seems to be what they carry) claiming I'd make my neighbors mad. I like the sound of the tors over stock (anything sounds better than them), and I have noticed a big performance gain over stock. But I also had them install the airbox elimination kit with K&N's and rejet along with the tors. So I'm thinking most of the gains are from that and not the exhaust. They're pretty quiet at idle, but sound good under acceleration and cruising. I get a lot of popping and an occasional backfire on decel, and they are kind of "farty" sounding. I've not heard any of the others, but I'm thinking about gutting the first baffle of the stock pipes and drilling the second one for starters and compare sound. After reading all the glowing reports on Bubs I'm kind of sorry I didn't get them. Probably would get even more HP and torque. Pete
PS-I'm also in Buck County, PA - Chalfont. I haven't seen any other America's or Speedmaster's either!

Sounds like your pilot circuit is lean.

How do I correct this? I'm mechanically inclined but new to this.

Hey Crow, What are you looking for? Sound, performance, or both? I've got the Bubs, no snork, Uni filter, 135/45, 1 shim on stock needles, stock airbox. 65.34rwhp, 49ft/lbs torque dyno. Here's a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PwyOg-LKjk

Your bike should have been re-jetted when the pods and exhaust were put on. You need to find out whats in there your main should have been changed out for a larger one. Depends on your elevation what size you need. To correct the popping you need to have a larger pilot jet installed or put one in yourself, probably about a 45 and then adjust your pilot screws for best idle. You should still have like a rumble on decel when jetted right but not a lot. The back fire could be a few different things but start by making sure they sealed the pipes with some high temp RTV when they put them on and that your header pipes are tight at the head. A leak in either place will cause backfiring but so will a very lean pilot circuit.

Might get lucky and be able to adjust the screws to get rid of the popping. I forget the number of turns, but after so many turns out you should go up a pilot jet size.

I wouldn't go more than 3 1/2 turns and probably would go up a jet size after 3+.

I got dunstal 19" shorties on mine and theyre very loud. Its more of a midrange sound compared to the deeper tones everyone else has. I remember riding with Ian and we were hitting a chord between both our bikes..it was definately a force to be reckoned with..hahah

There's a set of short TORS on Ebay right now. You might be able to get a set cheap! http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Triumph-A...0244977062&

Thanks for the advice guys. While running the bike at idle I did feel some exhaust pressure coming out of the right pipe where it meets the header pipe. I don't think they used any sealant at all. I'll take care of this and then try adjusting the pilot screws if it doesn't help.

Save your money and gut your stock pipes. You'll have as good of sound volume and performance as with any pipe that you pay 600 or 700 bucks for. The built in reducer for the right amount of back pressure and you don't have to jet up as much to get that fuel mixture just right.
Its more fun to be ridin'! I'm still ridin

I agree except for the jetting, most very free after market pipes come with about a 155 or 160, I run gutted stock pipes with K&N pods on the carbs, I left the reducer cone in for back pressure and I run 155 mains and 48 pilots and the dyno says I am just about right, little rich down low but not by much I think I may keep the 48s now, I was going to go 45 but I think I took care of it with the mixture screws.
As for performance I agree that gutted stock is as good or better than most after market pipes for sound and performance, can't say thats true for all. Sound maybe since I really love the sound of mine but I'm sure that if nothing else Super Trapp is better from a performance stand point.

Another option is JCWhitney 16" shorties. $33 each. It's basically an open pipe. Sounds great!
