I recently picked up a left-over 07 Speedmaster and I'm in the process of breakin' her in, with 260 miles ridden so far. At about the 200 mile mark, I noticed that the left header pipe (left while I'm sitting on the bike) had started turning yellow/blue (more yellow than anything) at the top bend near the manifold. This yellowing has gotten progressively worse over the next 60 miles. The right header pipe looks like it was bolted on at the factory this morning. Not a sign of any discoloration.

A couple of questions....

1. Does the uneven color change indicate that the left carb was not set up properly at the factory? Could this perhaps be an issue I should have handled under warranty (i.e. have the carb adjusted and header pipe replaced)?

2. What exactly is performed at the first 600 mile service? Sounds to me that it's really just an oil change and a general inspection of the bike. If that's the case, would you recommend me saving the money and just changing the oil and filter myself?

Thanks for your feedback.

I think most of our pipes blued at least a little. My dealer said they wouldn't replace the pipes unless they blued past the second bend.Remove the air injection system that seems to help.
I allways thought that its a good idea to have the dealer do the oil changes and recomended service work at least untill the warrenty runs out.I did all my mods myself but let the dealer do the service work.I just think if you ever have a warrenty issue at least the have a record of the service and you get to know the guys in the service dept.

You can do the service too but keep your receipts and good records of what you did. I think sitting on the kickstand is part of why the left pipe blues. Remove the AI and it will help decrease the bluing and might consider a small increase in the main and adjust your idle mixture screws to help even more.

This kit will take care of most future bluing problems.

(Caution! hide your creditcard before you go poking around that web site! You will see many things you want!)

Especially for the first few hundred miles, carb adjustment and balance tends to drift about. If one side is a bit lean or is pulling harder than the other, it will tend to blue the pipe more.

The first service includes a general checkup, oil and filter change, carb adjustment/balance, chain lube and adjustment, tire inspection, etc. All the major points are listed in the owners handbook.

The biggest value in having it done is the post service roadtest. The dealer mechanic has (hopefully) been over the same course on enough different bikes to have a good feel for what is normal and what is cause for concern.
