Yeah, that helps. 
I used Sony earbuds, MDR5 I think. They aren't the best but they're comfortable, relatively inexpensive, fit well under my helmet and double as earplugs when you're not listening to anything. I've gone through enough sets with similar silicon buds (covers) that I have lots of spares.
I never listen to anything within city limits or any congested areas. I don't necessarily stop and take them out, but riding with earplugs is okay as long as you keep your head on a swivel (which I do all the time anyway). I just can't have the distraction of music in traffic. But out in the middle of nowhere on a long roadtrip? Gimme my audiobooks!
