Does anyone have any experience with those ipod earphones that shove inside your ear on a motorbike? Do they cut the noise at all? Can you hear the music without destroying your ears?

first off your going to get plenty of pros and cons regarding riding with headphones/earbuds....

I use Shure EC3 with my iPOD and they do a nice job of cutting wind noise, external noise BUT still allowing me to hear emergency vehicles.

I guess I better clear up what I am going to do with these, I am not going to wear them riding around town. It's a 3 hour ride of open highway between where I live and the Rocky mountains.

Bose are great . I had the Etymotic research ones but my 14 year old daughter liked them so after she said please daddy please I got the cheaper Bose for myself (this always happens)and I've been happy.

Yeah, that helps.

I used Sony earbuds, MDR5 I think. They aren't the best but they're comfortable, relatively inexpensive, fit well under my helmet and double as earplugs when you're not listening to anything. I've gone through enough sets with similar silicon buds (covers) that I have lots of spares.

I never listen to anything within city limits or any congested areas. I don't necessarily stop and take them out, but riding with earplugs is okay as long as you keep your head on a swivel (which I do all the time anyway). I just can't have the distraction of music in traffic. But out in the middle of nowhere on a long roadtrip? Gimme my audiobooks!

I have sony ones too, forget the model, but they have the little silicon baffle, NOT the foam tips. They are mory comfy than the foam, don't pop out like the foam, and they really cut the wind noise, but you can still hear the motor, horns, sirens etc. (can you tell I had the foam kind?)

It should be said that theese are like $20 to $30 earphones. The actual good noise cancelling ones are a whole different ball game and a whole different PRICE game!! So for the fairly cheap category, find ones with the baffle style inserts.

I have a feeling that I have the same ones as Benny. I picked them up because they stay in my ears oretty well when I am putting my helmet on. I tried several different sets and the biggest problem I has was them falling out of my ears when putting on my helmet.

I even tried the kind that clip over the ear, ya know? Just gave hard parts to pinch inside my helmet...

Yeah soren those sure look like mine too. Took the ferry home yesterday from CT (cage) and was listening to my MP3 player in the cabin. Very noisy with all the kids, wind, water, etc, but it was nice cause I don't have to crank the volume. I even wear them mowing the lawn...

Riding with headphones isn't for everybody, but for those who use them, they are a godsend. Music doesn't at all distract from the ride, they actually allow me to focus more completely. And whenever your wrist or knee or neck start aching, I just focus more on the music and the pain goes away. I don't think I'd ever have been able to ride yesterday's 1200 miles without them.

Oh...to answer your question...I use etymotics and love them!

I have yet to try an I-pod while riding cross country. I do know that a long days ride even with earplugs leaves my ears a little buzzed after a long 500 to 600 mile day.

How do your ears feel with the combination of eight or nine to ten hours of motor noise, outside ambient noise and music piped in as well. Any concerns here?

I used these ones

Very comfortable...I had them in my ears for 17 hours with no discomfort. They are noise cancelling, so all I heard was the music (which is played at a normal listening level) and a light drone of wind noise in the background.

I still would not use then for city riding.I know that its not not legal in the great state of Pennsylvania

I guess it depends on the ear plugs you are comparing to, but the sonys cut down on that ambient/wind noise, so overall it's less tiring on the ears than before. Also, I don't have to turn it up that high, so it's not loud music.

I think I'm going to give those Etymotic ER-6i's a try, they look alot like the ear plugs that I use right now, and they're not 200 bucks. Thanks guys

Curious though why some of you ride bike's and are so concerned about the rules at the same time...little secret but I speed a lot on my TBA.

I actually set the noise limiter on my iPod to "as loud as I think is good for my ears in a normal environment" before starting the bike once, just to prevent myself from cranking the thing on the highway and not realizing it. The reduced wind noise actually lets you year your engine and other traffic better, in my opinion.

I agree with the others about not using in city driving, though. I will sometimes have them in my ears but never any music until I hit the county roads.

I integrated an Ipod Shuffle into my helmet.

I took apart a pair of cheap on-the-ear (not over-the-ear) headphones, leaving just the speakers/wires and mounted them inside my helmet at the position of my ears. I stashed all of the wiring inside the rim of the lining, except the plug which runs out the bottom of the liner on the left side to where I mounted the shuffle with super-velcro on the outside of the helmet.

I didn't want any wires "connecting" my helmet to anything else. I can pop the shuffle off the helment and stick the plug back up in the liner if I'm not going to use it, or to charge / sync it.

Works great. I can hear the music well enough even over bubs, and I can still hear sirens, etc.

Hitting the tiny little buttons in my thicker gloves is a bit tricky. But with my thinner gloves it's no problem at all.

Do you have any ear discomfort from the helmet padding pressing on the ear phones? I use foam ear plugs for long rides, and get pain in the ear after a couple of hours. I can wear the plugs all day mowing, so the pain is from my helmet padding on the plugs. I'm interested in the ear phones that work lkind of like a plug when the music is off.

That is one of the reasons that I like the Sony's. I dont get any discomfort from them at all. I have worn them for several hours at a time underneath my helmet.

+1 on what Soren said. One of the non-Sony earbud sets I tried had a little nub on the back of the earbuds. I guess it was some kind of "bass port" or some such nonsense. Well, that little extra nub was just enough to be excruciating under my helmet (at least I got an extra set of silicon inserts out of the deal). Those Sony's are perfect. They don't stick out at all.

On my Ipod I used a set of Sony noise cancelling headphones and installed them into my helmet. Too a bit of desoldering and resoldering but the results were great. No discomfort from having in an earbud in all day..and no reduced hearing when the system is off. Clipped the Ipod to the side of my lid and off I go.

Is the noise cancellation worth while? Do you have a picture of yourself with the ipod clipped to your helmet?

Shure makes 2 styles of earbuds. I would recommend these. I got mine at Sams Club for under $100. No wind, just sound. In fact many musicians use these same ones for personal monitors onstage.

You people that think it's a dumb idea, then dont use them. The rest of will use them. We wont tell you that you are dumb for your opinion if you dont tell us we are dumb for ours. It's call freedom of choice and opinion.

OK... back onto the original subject....
With noise canceling ear buds, how much noise really gets cancelled? Can you still hear the motor and traffic around you?

Based on Mark's recommendation I did some research on the various ear phones and found the Etymotic Research ER6i ear phones to be the best (at least on paper). I bought a pair and absolutely love them. I also have a pair of the Bose Quite 2 headphones, and the Etymotic ER6i ear phones block out more of the background noise than the Bose cancel out. The sound quality of the ER6i ear phones are by far the best I have tried.

Normally I always wear ear plugs when I ride. Now with the ER6i I get the same level of noise isolation as I would with foam ear plugs, but if I decide to listen to music I can. When riding the sound level using the ER6i ear phones is just slightly higher than if I was using them inside the house. I have worn the ER6i ear phones around town, but I don't have the music on. When out on an open road or highway then I put the music on.

I fly a lot also and the ER6i are much better than all those noise canceling headphones. Smaller, easier to carry, more comfortable, you can sleep better with them in, and they isolate the noise better.

Just my opinion.

Tom

I was reading this thread because I was interested in opinions on the quality of earphones. Thanks for all of those who rang in. It's often hard to get good honest feed back on the quality of products. I hate to buy something, head home all excited, just to be let down with a crap product.

Maybe those wanting to debate the pros and cons of use while riding, should start a thread on that subject.

I also currently have the sony, MDR-EX51LP,. Im a little disapointed in the sound quality for general use. But then im mostly deaf from years of listening to really loud rock and roll.
