If something is made in England would it not be built in the UK and in GB?

I get confused. I assume England is not Scotland and Ireland. But what about UK vs. GB?

As best I can sort it all, UK (United Kingdom) includes England and North Ireland. Great Britain Is the UK plus Scotland. England is that wee bit of chalk next door to Wales.

So the Prime Minister is in charge of the UK which would naturally make him in charge of GB and surely in charge of England. Wales is huh?

GB = England, Scotland, Wales.
UK = GB, Northern Ireland.

There are also Isle of Man and Channel Islands somewhere in there.

Well, I personally don't care if anybody around here calls me one of those "wacko environmentalist" or not! But my motto has always been...
...SAVE THE WALES!!!

But of course what else would you expect from one of those crazy Kalifornians anyway, huh?!

(besides lousy puns like this, that is)

Officially the country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

England is NOT the same as the UK! Most definitely not!

The name, Britain, is a reference to the land of the Brythonic speakers - I am one such person, as a Cornish speaker. The others are the Welsh. These are the true Britons.

Today, 'Britain' is a political construct consisting of England, Scotland, and Wales, as NIBiker said. However, there is one more significant area to include, that everybody forgets - the forgotten land with its forgotten people - Cornwall and the Cornish.

Because Cornwall has a Duke (i.e. Charles Windsor) who has the same powers, rights and privileges in Cornwall as his mother does in the rest of the UK, with the sole exception of Cornwall, Cornwall should really be recognised as a completely seperate territory within the UK. However, to do so would throw up a bizarre anomaly that Cornwall has a head of state who is not the Queen of England! So, rather than officially disclose such a royal anomaly, the state prefers to brush the Cornish question under the carpet, along with the extensive history of the Duchy of Cornwall's feudal exploitation of Cornish mineral assets which have provided a tidy profit for successive heirs to the throne. How were the great buildings of state purchased? How were several royal palaces constructed? etc, etc, etc Answer - with money obtained by feudal means from Cornwall.

Unfortunately, this issue is regarded by state authorities as so 'sensitive' that school children are not taught about such things in school. You Americans might find it quite bizarre that an issue of such great constitutional significance is regarded as a state secret.

The net result of all this brushing under the carpet is that most UK citizens (with the exception of many Scottish and Welsh) believe that Cornwall is just a 'county' of England. Well, I hope that the above few snippets will confirm that this is most certainly not the case!

Kind'a like what's goin' on right now in Eldorado Texas, right?!

That's about it, Dwight, except that Cornwall is surrounded by ocean on three sides, the other is a river. It's almost an island bar four miles of land, so we're not surrounded by anybody.

Can't say I know much about Eldoraydo, 'though.

As I said, my friend - you seem to have a big problem! I have never said anything that was either unfactual or insulting and denigrating to others, so why do you offend me?

If its an attempt at humour - it has missed me.

Well, in a nutshell Nigel...and seeing as how this situation in Texas may not have made the news over there:

Outside the town of Eldorado TX is where a group of fundamentalist Mormons lived in a compound, until last week when the Texas authorities raided it after claims of alleged child sexual abuse and possibly polygamy.

(hence my jokes about the Cornwall citizenry having a "separate culture" and "a whole lot a wives"....which I'm SURE isn't so....hence the jokes)

Ya know, I just remembered reading a letter to the Op-Ed section of the L.A.Times last week written by Sir Sean Connery in which he somewhat pleaded for and gave argument towards the idea of total Scottish independence.

I'm wondering how you folks over there feel about that?

I would cast my lot with "county", as opposed to independent entity.

Personally, not really bothered. I only class myself as English when footballs involved (yeh, the real football, that one were we kick a pigs bladder around for 90minutes ) I'm British and love Ireland, Scotland & Wales the same as England . But hate politics.

Last I heard, the Scots had their own parliament. The situation there would be somewhat like the US civil war being settled by giving the south their own congress but keeping the same president as the north.
The difference is that the royal family is, technically, Scots thanks to queen Mary of Scots cleverly arranging some marriages that made it inevitable that James 6 of Scotland (think it was 6, maybe 5) would also become James 1 of England. Because of that, Scots swear allegiance to the queen, but not the crown.

Yeah GB, if I recall Connery's post in the Times, he brought up many of those historical points. But I wonder how prevalent this sentiment of an almost complete separation of which he advocated is in today's Scotland?

I'm pretty sure the auld folk in the Highlands are all for it. The lowlanders traditionally didn't give a fig as long as they were left alone, so that probably holds true today. The youngsters will mostly go with whatever cause seems 'trendy' or, lacking that, whatever their parents don't seem to approve of.
