Just got back from a chilly ride. Ran into a brief shower so i stopped in a gin mill to wait it out. Half dozen HD's parked outside. Had a beer went back out one of the HD boys was checkin out my bike (nothing new about that ).Anyhow he says to me "Hey do you know your registration is expired?". I look at my tag March 2008 what the f.. i pull the reg paper out of my sadddle bag yep expired March 25th, Nitwits at DMV never sent me the notice. I was about 15 miles from home so now I'm paranoid. If I got stopped it would be about a $150 fine for driving an unregistered vehicle plus they would make me have it towed home. Luckly the guy who spotted and his buddy where leaveing at that time too, So I got in front of them and the and they follwed me home.(Nice guys ). So now I have to take my time to go down to DMV and get it straightened out, The hard part will be to convince them it was their screw up not mine.

PA has them for some things like my trailer has permanent tags. The trailer has to be rated over 10,001 pounds for that though. Smaller trailers you can get 5 year reg. For the price of fome of the tags here you should get a perm. reg. my wrecker is $198 a year for that stupid little sticker on the tag and then ins. slams me too because it's considered heavy use.

In GA the registration expires on your birthday so you don't forget that not only you are getting older but as penalty you have to pay for your tag :P

I presume registration means you have something similar to our MOT, where they check your bike is road worthy?

Some states require an inspection, most dont. But almost all (Montana has never expire stickers, and in Oregon it's every two years) require that you pay a fee every year just to put a sticker on your licence plate that tells you when your registration expires.

No.....here the registration is simply a tax you pay every 2 years. There is no inspection. Unless the vehicle is over 20 years old, Or if you are registering a composite bike(home made chopper), Then they check it out to see if you meet regulations.
Other wise you just hand them the money and they stamp your paper and issue a sticker for your plate.

In my state it is every year and all you do is send your money in and they send you a sticker that allows you to use your vehicle on the road, thats the registration and you put that sticker on your lic. plate. Now in PA we also have an inspection every year to ensure your vehicle is road worthy and in some places but not all there is 1 more test for emissions and that is yet a 3rd sticker. The inspection and emissions go in the corner of the windshield on on the left fork leg in my state.

I agree. On my recently renewed driver's license they dropped the "d" in my middle name. Making it "Edwar" instead of "Edward". They wanted another $25 to fix their mistake. They said I should have noticed it when I signed the license the day before. I refused, so my current vehicle is titled with an incorrect middle name.

It's a lot more for my '94 VW. When I did the bike it was $36. That year bikes, watercraft, trailers, etc. were only $36. Cars are your regular registration x 5 for permanent tags. It was worth it for the Jeep and Mustang, though, because the regular registration was so cheap.
Did I mention there's no sales tax, either?

Sounds more like our tax disk then. I've got two due at the end of April. The 125 is only £15 but the America I think is £64... That works out around $120 US... and you can see while people leave. I have a mate with a Golf R32 (at least I think that's what it is-like a gti but more so) and his tax is over £400. Then it's costing around £50 to fill it up these days too

More like road tax I think Ray. I might be wrong but I think the actual reg plate is the 'doc' if you like. Just like we can't photocopy our tax discs, the guys in the US can't go to Halfords and get some new plates made up like we can over here.

They're basing car tax on engine size and emissions. Buuuut .... if'n it's pre-'73, it's a classic and is free, no matter if it's 1.0l or 7.5l!!! Ask me how I know In my defence, HM Revenue & Customs MORE THAN gets their pound of flesh from me with unleaded nudging £1.12 / litre ($2.20 / litre)
£50.00 to fill up???? WTF? That must be one small fuel tank, mine cost me £85.00 the week before last (cost £70.00 when I bought the car 18 months ago). And THEN it only lasts a couple of days depending how much like a granny I drive.

I think it sounds a easier way of licensing your vehicle, but on the other hand the government dont seem to make much money out of it, so it would be a no go in the UK..

A little OT
In CT, we pay property tax on motor vehicles, or else we can't reg them. The towns and state work in collusion with this issue. Yesterday I had the pleasure of seeing the actual 1966 T 100 that was featured in the beginning of the movie "Woodstock." The current owner paid $300 for it some time ago, and it's in perhaps fair to good condition. Without their knowledge of the movie aspect, the town taxes '66 T 100s at a book value of $10,000. With his current tax mill rate, that works out to around $260 per year in tax, reg not included. I didn't know they were digging that deep for antique values these days. No end to to it...

In my state there is no property tax except on your land and home. All motorcycles are $18 to register. To answer above what FT said, no you can't go and have a new plate made, it's issued by the state. You can pay extra and have it personalized though if you wanted to. This is what tags look like here, but different colors for different states. The sticker in the bottom left corner is what you get every year for any tag you have in my state except a perm. reg.

License plate registration in MD is bi-annual at $97 (every two years). We pay the tax on the vehicles value at the time of titling (one time). I have historic plates on my '66 chopper, which fortunately requires no registration. There is no odometer/speedometer on my bike, so I listed none. The DMV cashier asked me why, and I told her it didn't come with one (the truth). She listed the milage as "Zero".

OK I neglected to say that, in my state PA, we also pay a 1 time tax on the value of the vehicle at time of purchase. I meant we don't pay a property tax every year like they do in some states like VA.

CT first you pay 6.5% sales tax on purchase, you pay that at the dealership if you are buying from a dealer. If you are buying from a private owner the one time sales tax is addded to your first years registration fee, Then you pay a yearly or bi-yearly registration fee, for the America it costs me about 60 bucks for 2 years. Plus in this state we pay a yearly proerty tax to the towns we live in on the vehicle, based on the blue book value. The proerty tax varis from town to town, Based on the towns tax rate. I think I paid about a $150 proerty tax on the BA last year. Are we confusing the heck out of you Brits yet?

Out of curiosity, is it different in different areas there in the UK like it is here in the US from state to state?

No. Flat rate for road fund license for the whole of the UK. The only difference is the bike cc.
Engine size (cc) Not over 150 12 months = £15.00 6 months = Not applicable 151-400 12 months = £33.00 6 months = Not applicable 401-600 12 months = £48.00 6 months = Not applicable Over 600 12 months = £66.00 6 months = £36.30 Cars are different alltogether - as you can see in this easy to remember nifty little chart ....
All things motoring tie into each other ... every year, a car or bike (over 3 years old) needs an MOT (Ministry of Transport) roadworthyness test. In order to get the visible road fund license, we need to go to the post office with a valid insurance document and (where applicable) a valid MOT certificate.
Each year the road fund license is a different colour making older invalid ones more noticable at a glance.
It's all computerised these days too so a police car equiped with a camera can read the car plates and within 0.5 seconds it says whether the car is stolen, has valid MOT / insurance / road fund license etc.
It's not foolproof though - I bought another car about a month ago but got pulled over by the police last week because their computer said I had no insurance. Oh how we laughed when the police called my insurance company only to find I WAS covered after all and the police computer hadn't been updated

WHAT?! "$10,000"?! So how do they know every '66 500cc Triumph there in CT is in perfect 100 point condition???
Or, is it perhaps based on the amount the owner has insured their motorcycle's value as, which in the case you described above might make that particular "movie" motorcycle worth that much???

My '66 that I licensed was basically a non-running, highly modified (poorly..) chopper. No way it was worth or will ever be worth $10k. Quote:

Some years ago, I renewed my license, but the CA DMV made a change to a new computer system at about that time and I got lost in the data transfer. When the new license didn't come in the mail, I went to the DMV where I was told to wait another 90 days and got an extension stamp on the back of the old license. A few weeks later, my license was inspected by officer Kilby in Hollywood and was told that the DMV does not stamp the back of the license to extend the expiration date and got a ticket. I wet to court and was told to come back and show a valid license and the ticket would be dismissed. So, I went to the DMV to see if I could get a copy. No, they can't issue a new copy until the ticket was cleared. No, the ticket can't be cleared without a valid license. No, the DMV and court can not get together and resolve their differences. It took 5 years to get it sorted.

I remember finding out the vehicle inspection sticker had expired on my bike - then being taken for a one way ride in the back seat of a patrol car.

Last year i stupidly put the new registration sticker on my wifes car when it should have gone on mine. I drove around for a few months with expired tag even though i had the new tag receipt in my wallet. Finally spotted the expired tag on my car, and after realizing what i had done i went down to my local court house, and in my finest British accent told the pretty young girl behind the counter what i had done, She smiled and gave me a new regstation sticker.
