I'm not sure how many of you guys have already done so but throw out the stock intake manifold clamps. The other day I swaped mine for some SS hose clamps and boy does it feel smoother.
I suspected i had a vacuum leak and went about checking for one, when i got to these 4 clamp all where as tight as they would go , these things just don't tighten quite enough to create a good seal and besides the marine grade SS clamps polish up nice and look much better than the stock ones.

I got mine at the local auto parts store. I also got them wider and they fit perfectly in the grooves on the rubbers.

Total of about $5.

Just out of curiousity, what made you think you had a vacuum leak? Was it not running right?

So the new clamps took care of it?

Sure did, those stock clamps just don't tighten down quite enough.

That's cool. I'm going to change mine. We have stainless clamps at work. Mine left pipe is blue and the bike just doesn't seem to be running right....even after balancing and adjusting the carbs. Thanks for the tip bleweyzarsoff.

The stock clamps just don't tighten properly. Especially after removing them a couple of times. What happens is if you have a leak, when the motor heats up the rubbers expand a bit and then the leak goes away. Makes for a real headache when trouble shooting. I have the oem clamps, but am looking to buy some replacements. I friend of mine has a '01 bonneville who had an issue with the oem clamps too. So you brr riders could have an exaggerated problem given the nature of thermodynamics.

Also note on the new clamps: you need to be very careful not to tighten them too much as they tend to then push themselves slowly off of the carbs or the intake manifold thingys. It takes a bit of patience and some gentle prying to get them on just right. once you get in there and tighten them, you will see what I mean.

You could always paint the manifolds and carb outlets with Indian Head Gasket Shellac before tightening the clamps on the rubber hoses..... they won't leak, I guarantee it!

Of course, they'll never come off again either, but hey....

I "borrowed" some stainless hose clamps from work and compared them to the stock ones and they are wider. It doesn't look like they will fit into the grooves in the intake rubbers. Are there others out there that are thinner and will be more of a direct replacement?

I got the heavy duty rubber intake boots from (I think) BellaCorse and they came with new SS clamps.

Careful not to overtighten as I replaced with wider ss clamps and ended up punching little holes in the carb intake rubbers (right before a RAT ride when we use to do that around here - remember Pat?) The service manager and I had to "borrow" replacements rubbers from a crated T100 so we could all get on with the ride. I was popping and gurgling and backfiring like a mad man with the tiniest little tears in the rubbers. (Oh that sounded real nice - didn't it? ) The heavy duty Bella Corse with SS clamps sounds like a good way to go though.

The heavy duty boots are nice. Took some muscle to get em on... but they are nice n snug. That and the carb brace and I don't even need the freak brackets to hold the carbs up.
