has anyone tried any of these homemade carb tuners? I was wondering if it is a better/cheaper alternative for the few times I'll probably use it.

I like the home made option. Another member here made a really cool modification to it. Put a small valve at the bottom of the loop where the oil is (I use 2 stroke oil so if it gets sucked into the engine it won't hurt anything) The ball valve makes it so the oil won't get sucked into the engine while it's closed in case you are that far out of balance. Slowly open the valve and if it seems that far out adjust some and try again until you can leave it fully open then fine tune.

The 2nd one you linked to is the one I use, with the yard stick.
