I used channel locks and a crescent wrench, but in
this thread TomV said he used car brake spring pliers to hold the bottom nut, and used a 1 1/2" socket to remove the top nut. Here's a pic of the brake spring pliers, and you should be able to find them at any auto parts store for $10 or less.
