I took mine off without a problem to install the freak 3 years ago and as far as I can remember it's a tight fit but if you remove the bolts that are thru the chrome fender supports behind the upper shock mount and the 2 under the seat the fender should slide out after you unplug the wire harness for the rear lights (they should run behind the ignition switch). It may be wise to remove one bolt from each shock and let the rear tire hang while the bike is on a jack so you have more room to work. Just be careful not to scratch it.
On the other hand if the bolt fits without hitting the chrome you can chase the threads without removing the fender. Just run the tap in where the bolt should be and you should be golden.
