This Sunday, 4/6, will be my first tech day of 2008.

Benny's coming over from LI to help Hedge(from TRAT)
relocate his key switch, and install the lay-flat kit.
That's bonnie talk.

I want to pull my cams, and measure my shims, so I
can do the calculations to get the new ones. The new
digital micrometer came from Sears today, ready to go!

Any, and all, are invited and welcome.
If you have something you want done, or need
help with, or you just want to watch, speak up!
RSVP here so I can get an idea for food, etc.

Of course, this is last minute.

It looks like it's going to be a nice day. I'll be there. Let me know if there are any tools I could bring. Times? Address?

Oh yeah Charlie I'm gonna need directions, or at least the exit number if I'm coming up the Merritt from the NY side. Normally I come from the ferry which is north of you. I should be there by 11 I think, if not a little earlier. Unless you want to start later... I'll be on 4 wheels but will have 2 wheels with me, if you can figure that out

like an idiot, I forgot where these shin' dings take place.

I would LOVE to make it but I'm not sure what the boys are up to and where we'll be on our sunday ride.

I really need a hand with syncing my carbs this year and would love to meet some guys in the process.

Too bad because Frank could have shown off his new 'hot rod' 904.

Directions

From the north(New Haven)
Take the Merritt Parkway(rt15)south to exit 38.
At the end of the ramp, turn right on New Canaan Ave(rt123),
pass under the bridge to the light(1 block).
Turn right on Nursery St. and go up the hill to 4-way stop(1 block).
Turn left on Ponus Ave. It's the 4rth driveway on the right
(less than 1 block).

From the south(New York)
Take the Merritt Parkway(rt15)north to exit 38.
At the end of the ramp, turn right on New Canaan Ave(rt123).
Immediately get in the left lane to turn left at light(around 100 feet).
Turn left on Nursery St. and go up the hill to 4-way stop.(1 block).
Turn left on Ponus Ave. it's the 4rth driveway on the right
(less than 1 block).

Nursery St. is rough, and there is usually sand/gravel at the
intersection of New Canaan Ave. BE CAREFULL.

You'll see an American flag 10 feet before the driveway,
And I'll post "TECH DAY" signs at the turns.

Ride safe,
Can't wait,
Uncle Charlie

I am going to talk to Frank today.

He or I will post sometime today if we can make it.

Would sync'n carbs be possible? No biggy but I figure if we CAN make it then I might as well learn the process.

Address: 175 Ponus Ave. Norwalk, CT 06850
My cell: 203 216 8827
Start time: +/- 10:00am

I have a vacuum gauge carb synchronizer for balancing carbs,
and air, electric, and hand tools.

Does anybody have the adapter for the front axle?
Or the pins for the cam gears(so I don't have to make 'em)?

Sorry this is so last minute, but I jumped at the chance to
get Benny over here to help me, and Hedge(from TRat).
Figured I'd open it up for any who can make it.
It's always a pleasure to get my Triumph friends together.

Charlie try to plan the next one a little further ahead. There are some things I'd love to do like run the wires which I know Benny has done before. Also need some time to order some stuff.

I'm sure this wont be the last.
What's so funny about a digital mic?
I don't get it? Some things escape me.
Wish I'd asked you in advance to make
the cam gear pins for me. Didn't know
you're a machinist.

Only 5 or 6 times now. By now I don't really do much, I just lull you into thinking I'm helping and you do it

balancing carbs is a 5 minute job, you can set up an assembly line:)
Love to meet you Boston guys too! And see the T-rod of course.

Might come down and join you Charlie. Depends on the weather. I just don't enjoy those cold early season rides as much as I used to. Regardless, I am definitely looking forward to riding up to Bennington with you guys.

5 plus me = 6.
Guest List:
John aka JG aka Hedge(on TRat)
Pat aka gilligan
Benny aka Benny
Matt aka Matt (only one to ride on his Tiger)
Justin aka capn (who now lives across the street)

Hedge brought his slow cooked ribs, that he finished on
my grill. I added some cole slaw and mac salad which made
for a great lunch.

On to the tech stuff....

Hedge's mission was to install the speedo/tach lay-down
bracket with key relocation kit on his cool Bonnie Black.
He got to my shop before me, and jumped right into it.
Disassembled the headlight bucket, and pulled out the
wires/connectors as per the directions. Hedge put his
glasses on and sat down at a table with all the parts.
He took his time, and went through the steps 1 by 1.
Fast forward.... it all worked out great, and Benny
took the test drive down the Parkway with Matt.

My bike:
It took me several attempts to grind down some torx bits for
the cam gear pins, but I finally got two made that fit nice
and snug. Breaking loose the cam-shaft holder bolts is a
scary feeling. For a fastener that has a torque spec of only
10nm (per haynes) they sure are hard to get off. I tried to
push down on the ratchet as hard as I was turning it.
One loud click, then another, and then it spins so freely
that you think you broke, or stripped, it. But not.

I had gotten zip-loc bags, and a sharpie, so I could label,
and bag everything, as I took it apart. Pulled the cams, and
then the shims. One by one, bagged and tagged.

Just finished mic'n the shims, and making a chart w/specs.
Now for the ciphering. I'm gonna try to plug the #'s into
Pat's shim calculator, and also use the formula from Haynes.

For those that want to play along at home, here are the specs I got:

Exhaust

Gaps .33 .34 .34 .335
Shims 2.757 2.758 2.831 2.804

Intake

Gaps .23 .22 .19 .15
Shims 2.656 2.655 2.728 2.711

And away we go!
Uncle Charlie

Thanks Charlie, Next time should be warmer, that way we can all arrive on bikes. Wish I could have stuck around for the ribs, but told the wife I would get back early to do some errands. Hope you get the correct shims and get those cams back in soon. Supposed to be 60 degrees tomorrow...
