Well as it gets closer and closer I have to start thinking about the ride down. I was wondering who has decided on routes and which day they are leaving.
I was planning on leaving the Saturday before the rally but now I think I'm going to leave the Friday just not sure at what time so I don't know how far I'll get the first day. As for routes I'm open to different suggestions. Anyone have any ideas? Comments?

That's a tough call other than a parallel path to I-75...at least from Knoxville south you can really take some cool mountain roads...

Oh no I won't be taking I-75 again. I did that last year and only because I left a day late for the rally. I've been bouncing the idea around of skipping over to the Blue Ridge so that I can ride it in the reverse direction but that is on the back burner for now.

I've got 2 options...
Leave Saturday morning...1100-1200 miles later arrive Saturday night.
Leave Friday afternoon...go to Wilkesboro, NC for Merlefest for a day or 2, then shoot over to Dahlonega.

what about a Greyhound bus? You could stash a minibike in the storage compartment below the bus...

I am going to head North and then at some point head Northwest. Usually, I just follow Moe, Phil, and Tom. They wake me when we hit Commerce, GA.

I go south from Tulsa take a left at I-40 through ARK. This year instead of the superslab to Nashville, I think I will take US 64 after Memphis through southern Tenn.to I-75 S. Last year the 4 lanes in the rain wore me out. Also lots of nice scenery that way. All by myself again.

That is the longest set of directions I have ever see. I would also suspect the 19 hrs to get there on a bike. To it all in you would have to take a week. Wojo what was wrong with I75 other than it being a highway?

Well, he did say he was leaving the weekend before the rally so he could take his time.
PES: how about Hwy 72 from the south of Memphis through north MS and AL, mostly a nice lightly traveled 4 lane until you get to Hunstville, then it's a nice scoot through the hills to my neighborhood and a blast over the mountain and into GA.

Ed, that seems like a good route. I've travelled the Ohio part several times and it seems that's the only way to get through the state. Your route I notice takes me past Chimney Rock in N.C., might have to put that on the "gotta stop and look" list. Quote:

That isn't enough reave? I did it to Knoxville last year and not only was it tiring but extremely boring. It looks like I've got an extra day to get down there so why not use it to the best that it can be. I started at 10 days, now I'm up to 11. If I can squeeze an extra day at the end....

last year I bombed down I-81, I-77, I-85. It got me there but I was wiped. I don't see a practical route alternative so far so I'm either going to stretch it from three days to four this year or find a truck I can borrow - renting looks crazy expensive.
If anyone else from the far north east thinks they'd like to trailer I'd be willing to kick in a couple of hundred toward expenses for a ride down.

I know there are other references here, but US41 is as bad as I65, flat and boring just like the rest of this state...

Moe, you gotta love that section in NC around Banner Elk and the scoot to Cherokee. Nice plan, can I come too?

Right now it looks like I'm leaving the Friday and riding over to Waynesboro, VA then spending the next couple of days making my way down the Blue Ridge and over to Dahlonega.

John - Waynesboro is a bit under 1000 km for you - is that one day or two?

I'm going to get that done in one day so that I can spend the next two days riding the Blue Ridge and getting to Chy's. Mark might be meeting up with me are you thinking the same Bill?

Just not sure yet john. I'm going to allow myself 4 days for the run down and i may follow your example and do the last couple of days on backroads.

Just head north John, you got plenty of time.

I don't know Ed. There is not as many of those little green scenic dots on that road. What day are you leaving? I am trying to have enough leeway to try and miss any nasty weather, so I may leave as early as Saturday or Sunday or as late as Tuesday.

I have a work issue that might restrict me to the very early part of that week and may even push me into a pre-rally visit The only reason I suggested that route was it's the way I've gone to Memphis for years and I know it pretty well...very smooth fast sailing but not lonely drudgework like the slab.

Sorry about the work issues. Hwy 72 sounds alot better than I-40. I'd like to try a meet up with some folks, but the group is coming in from so many different directions it's hard to connect.

I hope to be there by then. I missed the Thursday ride last year, I'm not going to miss it again. And by the way, I waited about 3 hours in Nashvile for you to call last year. Kind of hard to call or answer the phone when you are riding, Mr. Fireman.

Anyone ever stay in Savannah, TN. 100 miles or so East of Memphis? I'm thinking of making overnight stop on the way to GA.via Hwy 64.
