My son Steve made A-side starting hooker for the Manchester, NH (USA) Amoskeag's rugby team (U19's). He had his first game today and he won 80% of the scrums for his team and had 1 touch. Very proud dad to say the least. I must say he's much tougher than his old man.
Good on Steve. Rugby is a brilliant game. Good for character building in a bloke.
Watched a game between Cornwall and the USA many years ago. I was amazed how the 'yanks' managed to influence the game with their gridiron skills. Can't quite remember who won that day 'though.
I know that I am probably going to incur the wrath of my fellow Brits here but....
Rugby has much earlier origins than what is formally recognised today. Whereas the official version is that, whilst indulging in a footie match at Rugby school, William Webb Ellis (Ellis is a Cornish name BTW) suddenly picked up a ball and ran with it, Rugby is in fact based on the Celtic sport of hurling that was once common in Cornwall. This is somewhat rare these days and when it is played (roughly twice a year) the game can be very rough and lasts for about a day but I'll say no more than that....
