Sure, that way you can prophesize the apocalypse and demand sacrifice regardless of what happens. Every event can be claimed as proof of your prediction and you’re right no matter what happens. No one has had it so good since the Oracle at Delphi.
Droughts, floods, blizzards, heat, windy, calm, cloudy, clear, cooling, warming, it doesn’t matter, they’re ALL evidence of the prescience of the theory. If calling it “Global Warming†doesn’t work out because it’s not getting warmer let’s just change it to “Climate Change.†Of course the recommended remedies stay the same regardless of the stated problem.
Not even Jim Jones or David Koresh demanded, and received, such blind obedience. Not since the American Communist Party abruptly changed from wanting the US to stay neutral in WWII to demanding we fight the Nazis coincident with Operation Barbarossa in June 1941, has there been such a sudden shift demanded of true believers. The funny thing is that those who are willing to make the shift don’t even see it.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.
