Run for your lives, it's the beginning of the Ice Age that is to follow the Global Warming. Now, where did i put my spear for when Mammoths return to Connecticut?

Global warming is not widely accepted here in Southern Az as we find it to be quite warm year round for the most part.

Been that way for many hundreds of years.

Al Gore does not even bother coming here. He spins fantasy tales for the enchanted forest in other locales.

Don't forget, all that snow and cold weather is evidence of global warming.

The correct term for all this should be "Global Climate Change" per us EPA website:

How will climate change affect precipitation?

Researchers estimate that rising global temperatures in the past century have led to about a 5 percent increase of atmospheric water vapor over the oceans. Because precipitation is generated mainly by weather systems that feed on the water vapor stored in the atmosphere, this has generally increased the intensity of precipitation and the risk of heavy rain and snow events. As the climate continues to warm, atmospheric concentrations of water vapor are predicted to continue to rise, leading to an increase in the global average amount of precipitation, at least partly through less frequent, more intense storm systems. Higher temperatures also increase evaporation, accelerating the drying of land surfaces and leading to droughts in some areas. A warmer climate may reduce snowpacks in mountains such as those in western North America, also leading to seasonal droughts. Thus, climate change increases the risks of both droughts and floods, albeit at different times and places. For more information, visit the Future Precipitation and Storm Changes page on EPA’s Climate Change site.

Source: IPCC Climate Change 2007: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability
Source: EPA Climate Change Science, Future Precipitation and Storm Changes.

Using the term Global Warming tends to make people believe that everything will just get really f...ing hot. The change in climate can cause the opposite reaction at times.

well, that, and global warming can lead to global cooling. There have been significant chunks of ice melting and breaking off of the Artic ice pack at the North Pole and in Antarctica, but this isn't such a big deal, because it is salt water, which doesn't dilute ocean thermalclines like the Gulf Stream (although it will help global sea levels rise). What they are studying now is the melting ice sheets in places like Greenland, which are composed of freshwater ice, which if it continues to melt, could dilute the Gulfstream, interrupting the flow of cold and warm water north and south (which is what drives the climate). Screw up the flow of warm water northward via the Gulf Stream, and things will get colder in places like the Northeast and northern Europe. Guess, like everything, we'll just have to wait and see (somewhat) what really comes of the whole thing....

Hey its all coming to pass just like Al said. I expect that within mere years we will wake up some morning here in Tucson , Az and find snow and ice and catostrophic climate change ala "The Day After Tomorrow"

I wonder what would have happened in Northern Europe during the middle ages when the last "mini-ice age" occurred if some local preeminent politico had warned them all about the "Inconvenient Truth" of impending "global warming"

You nailed it. We're talkin like a 2 deg warming, but my understanding is that it leads to more extreme weather. Colder cold, hotter hot. It only has to be extra hot for one or two days a year to keep that warming trend mathamatically, so people LOVE to point out the cold days and say "Suck it Gore!" But it is warming... Plus people can't seem to separate the issues into the fact that the earth is warming and if it's a man-made problem.

Climate's a complex mistress. There's long cycles (1,000's of years), short cycles, not to mention short cycles tucked inside of long cycles. I believe we tend to remember our best year, last year, this year and hope for better year next year.

It fascinates me that this issue is so quickly politized. The facts of the intermountain west are that plant phenology ("green up") occurs earlier, spring planting dates are also getting earlier. Is that because it was cloudy or rained today or was really hot last summer? Earth has never been a static planet.

At a recent meeting of western states crop and range professionals in Reno, a climatologist speculated the old precipitation "averages" will no longer apply in the near future. We are entering a dry period in this area. We can debate ad nauseum if it's due to "Al Who". But to me that's a "red herring" that only sells papers and gives the pundits something to pundit about.

I'll leave to "man-caused, natural-caused" debate to others. Meanwhile, farmers will be seeding spring crops about 7 days earlier on average than their fathers did in this neck of the woods. I'm not smart enough to know if that's bad or good, I just know it is.

I just read thru these posts....and i am very happy to see there are rational people who seem to understand (to the best we can) the problem facing us. Set aside the evironmental wacko side of it and then also set aside the it doesnt exist side and educate yourself enough to try and understand what is happening. If more people would do this it would be easier to make the needed changes to reverse this trend.

Ahem... Are we forgetting that giant glowing orb in the sky we call the SUN? Solar output has diminished and we are headed into another solar minimum the likes of which we last saw near the tail end of the 16th century. Yes we should make an effort to pollute less, although I think people are crazy to say that CO2 is a pollutant when quite a lot of living things depend on it, not to mention it is naturally occurring compound. The Sun has more of an effect on the climate of this earth than we ever will. That is not to deny that green house gasses also play a role. However the graphs show that higher solar irradiance precedes warming, and CO2 follows and vice-versa.

I still say that with little more than a 100 or so years of accurate records it is still not enough to truly understand how this planet works. It is a very complex machine with so many interactions and variables you couldn't do an FMEA (Failure Mode Effects Analysis) on it if you had 1000 years to complete it.

So, lets evolve away from c02 producing energy (with the exception of breathing). That will take time. After all, we didn't evolve in a few days. Lets quit politicizing the issue. Lets ignore the chicken little's like Al (if you don't believe you think the earth is flat / manbearpig is going to get you) Gore, as well as the opposite extreem and continue to collect data as we evolve away from co2 and greenhouse emissions. Its not like we are suddenly all going to burn off or freeze up. Sheesh.

Lets not forget that this whole thing got blown out of proportion early by scientists that ignored factors and exaggerated others simply because they needed the grant money (Hey, out of work scientists need jobs too!). And now politicians are doing the same thing simply to get elected. The real truth will bear itself out, and we will all have a laugh over a Guinness at my place.

Do you work in automotive by any chance? As soon as I saw FMEA, I said, aha, Engineer!! That would be an interesting excercise!!! And how about a control plan? Crap, don't even think you could get past the Process Flow, since we are a LOOOONNNNGG way from understanding all of the variables that go into making this machine we call home tick. If you're a fan of all the cheery shows on Discovery and the Science channel now like "Life after Humans" which disects what will happen to all of our stuff if we were to suddenly go poof, then you'll realize that there's no need to worry since the Sun is going to either shrink into a White Dwarf or swell into a Red Giant, so we'll either be cooked alive by Gamma rays or the sun will swell in size (before collapsing into a Black Hole) to the point that Venus and Mercury will be vaporized and the temperature on Earth will be raised to the point that Mercury is now, and all the worrying will be pointless. So, hope I've brightened everyone's day now, tata!!

Yep. Sure do. What gave it away?

I work for Ford and have seen my share of FMEA's. Great tool for understanding ever aspect of any component or system design. But like you said, impossible to complete one on our earth and all of its interactions both internal and external. That's why I chuckle at climate models since there is no way for the modelers to completely capture every finite variable. It is as if they never heard of Chaos.

Well. It will get cold. It will get hot. The Polar caps aint gonna melt though. No scientist has yet been able to prove any of that al gore end of the world BS. Its all just BS.

Climate changes. It always has and it always will. The list of noted scientific minds who agree with me are numerous but simply dont get a lot of publicity.

I expect someday another Ice age will occur small or large but it will occur as it has appeared throughout time.

slowly ...very slowly and inexorably.

I dont think most people take global warming too seriously and its easy to see why.

We know the weather changes but we know that the prognostications of doom are just that. Bogus prognostications for the purpose of one mans ego.

There will be trends of warming and trends of cooler winters and hotter summers but then there always have been.

The idea of being able to blame that on the last 100 years or so of industrialized development is ...funny.

Gee Greg, thanks for making my point. Taking drastic, and economically catastrophic, actions to forestall a theoretical problem that we can have negligible affect upon even if the doomsayers are correct, makes little sense. Promoting panic and demanding immediate action serves an agenda, but not an environmental one.

Well, see, that's where we differ. As I have pointed out many times before, except for companies that are too stupid to get out of their own way, it is not and does not have to be "economically catastrophic". There are loads of companies out there right now on the leading edge of technology making wind power, eco-friendly, etc... equipment, cars and machines, all cashing in on this desire to treat the planet which gives us life (or can take it away) better. Now, personally, doom or gloom aside, I really don't see much wrong with treating our home better. Would you allow someone to come into your home and dump their junk? Again, decisions we make today will not affect us today, they will affect your grandchildren. SOOOO, if we are a little overly cautious and adopt policies and technologies that make our planet cleaner, AND can be economically beneficial (to companies who don't shove their heads in the sand) to many. There's a LOT of money to be made in Green Technology and thousands of companies are cashing in nicely (GM, Toyota, Honda, Vesta, GE, etc...) So, you have a choice, join the bandwagon, say cumbaya to green and profit from it, or be left behind. The rest of the world has embraced green and is going that way and making money. Are we a captialist country that embraces new ideas and technology or will we just let the rest of the world take that away from us too?

Ya know, I haven't seen this "Inconvenient Truth" movie myself, but I hear Al Gore narrates it, right?!

Well, in THAT case I DON'T think I'll ever see it 'cuz I don't think I could take sitting through almost two friggin' hours listenin' to a guy soooooooo friggin' inept as a public speaker that he couldn't even beat out Idiot Boy for a job back in 2000!!!

Well Ian, I'm not sure about "Glodal warming"(is that some kind'a glandular problem or somethin'???)...BUT....this GLOBAL WARMING is IN FACT taking place. HOWEVER, as some open-mined individual said earlier in this thread, "the QUESTION is if it's being caused by the industrialized nations of the world is STILL in question".

I DON'T KNOW for SURE! But NEITHER do the rest of you jokers here.

All you intelligent guys forgot to mention forest fires. The climate on the earth is changing and "Mega" also called "Seige" fires are occuring, some feel because of Global Warming. Hotter fires are making them harder to control thus burning 500,000 acres or more at a time. These fires are 10 times larger then forest fires we have had 20 years ago. Some of these areas are going to take a generation or more to recover. Trees that used to able to withstand some fires are incinerating with the new "Mega" Hot Fires. This is partly caused by early Springs and snow melts. I'm not sure it is all caused by Carbon Monoxide releasd by vehicles but it's probably playing a part. See program on the CBS website "The Age of Mega-Fires" 12/30/07.

OK I meant People causeing global arming is a load. We can't hope to match the amount of greenhouse gas expelled by the planet or even come close. I was just being lazy. Then to put it on cars and motorcycles and lawnmowers,etc.. is absolutely crazy. There are much larger sources but no one wants to go with out electricity , or plastic or any number of other things. What is going on as far as any warming has little or nothing to do with us, it's all part of a natural cycle that's been going on for millions of years. Our little bit is but a speck in the larger scheme of things.

A big part of the forest fire problem is because we prevent the natural cycle of those fires so when they do hit they are bad and plenty of fuel that has been building up.I have seen and read quite a bit on that too.

If you guys want to believe in the mythical global warming be my guest.

Sure they've embraced green. FOR US! China, India and most of Asia and (I think) all of Africa are exempt. The Europeans want to use various baselines for emissions that make it very easy for them, and impossible for us, to comply without huge hits to the economy. And, despite that, the Europeans still aren't making their goals.

They are considering CO2 as a pollutant because they say, with scant proof by the way, it is causing the Earth to warm. Despite the fact that the warming trend seems to have ended a decade ago.

Better fuel economy and cleaner power generation will not stop the increase in CO2 emissions much less cut it to the levels the greenies want the US to agree to. Only major cuts in the standard of living will do that. And since India and China will make up for any cuts on our part dozens or hundreds of times over, what is the point of that except to beggar the US?

Global warming is no longer a scientific debate. It has become a theological one as many people are as attached to it as the most zealous religious adherent. The demands that we must do something immediately, despite their own admission that even the most draconian economy busting measures could slow their predicted disaster by only a few years, tells me that there is something else to the agenda.

The cap and trade regimen the greenies want to impose will make fortunes for a few that will make Warren Buffet and Bill Gates look like the corner florist, and do nothing for the environment. Al Gore is set to do very well however.

The current hysteria is about to go bust as all the recent evidence is that there is no man made global warming. In fact little or no warming at all. Like the previous scares this one will fade away. I’m just hopeful that this time those who promoted the scare will be held accountable for it.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Eeh! You can forget about THAT ever happening, Larry ol' boy. You see, it's been 5 friggin' years since "somebody else" used these kind of scare tactics to further their agenda and STILL there's been no accountability coming forth for THEM!!!

(...so DON'T hold your breathe, dude!)

Amazing. I stated this and a few others agreed: Global Warming is a bad name. It should be Global Climate Change. You always get the "It snowed here in March...its not warming" LOL.....Hilarious. If you dont understand the concept that climate change can make this happen then dont even comment.

Others have said....cars dont cause any harm....neither do motorcycles or lawnmowers. Please tell me this....does it help the environment???? How can anyone say that spewing toxic crap into the air does nothing? Maybe I am totally wrong on this....but i dont think it is all that good for ole mother nature and earth.

I agree with some things though....the factories, electricity companies etc do ALOT more harm than our vehicles do....and the vehicles can easily be engineered to produce less polutants....and already have. So we need to hold th real culprits to the fire.

And other posts have just stated totally WRONG information.....so bad that i dont even want to comment.

I will keep reading this crap just for entertainment. But from what i can tell many are not willing to even consider making any changes to be kinder to the planet. Even if you choose not to believe in Climate Change why would you not want to do things that make this world a better place to live.

But this is my opinion. If you feel you must totally not agree with the scientific facts that there is a Global Climate Change then that is your choice

I do quite a bit , I recycle as part of what I do for a living as well as all my household trash. Part of my towing is stripping junk cars to seperate all the aliminum, copper, platinum, and steel. Wendy and I ride our bikes as much as possible to save gas. We take our box truck to an event and it stays there until the event is done riding bikes back and forth in between. I don't have to swallow the global warming bologna to do whats right for the environment.I agree recycle, conserve gas,it is a finite resource.

I will add I am very careful not to spill any oil or anti-freeze and burn the waste oil for heat and filter and reuse the anti-freeze. I also compost any food waste. I have always done these things and really don't buy into the whole global warming thing but one thing I do buy into is our lack of land fill space and see no reason not to recycle,it becomes 2nd nature once you start. We have seperate trash cans for food waste, recyclables, and trash. Family of 6 and we make less than 1 39gal. trash can of trash a week. Normally about 1/2 full, mostly diapers. The rest either goes to the recycle center or the scrap yard. Oh or the pile in the woods of food waste waiting for the flower beds..

Even better. Kinda weird...I love to compost! Me and wife have about 2 walmart size bags of trash a week. The rest is recycled.
I have new cars all with 100K antifreeze and am approaching that on one now. How do you filter it?

Me and the wife are trying to have children. She is pushing cloth diapers or maybe this product called gdiapers....www.gdiapers.com. flushable and/or compostable inner liners. Not sure I can do that or not but may try it.

Yeah! So Ian here is "careful not to spill any oil or anti-freeze", huh?!

Then why was he so careless with that spot remover he was using around his dog, HUH?!

pump it through an oil filter if I want to use it for a customer pour it through a coffee filter to use in my stuff.

I always check the specific gravity so I know weather to mix water in with it and how much.
