Cant depreciate it that i know of. Thats only available if you use it for your own business or if work requires something that they will not pay for....they offer work vehicles if needed.....so i dont think I can do that.

Check into it. My wife uses her car for work. She gets paid mileage but we can still claim the depreciation.

Its been fun. I am off to the Hummer Dealership....after that I will buy a trailer with which to haul home as many regular light bulbs as possible. I will ask the cashier for an individual plastic bag for each bulb (and I will throw the bags out in the trash when i get home). After that I will change the oil in all my other vehicles and dump it in the nearest small stream.

Night all

Maybe we all need to go Doug Fine's way. The USA Today has a story yesterday about his book, "Farewell my Subaru". Wacky stuff.

Quote:

"Devil Wagons"

In 1896, the automobile craze in France quickly spread and left Americans wondering about this new invention. At this time, America had the train and the bicycle to use if they wished, but the main system of transportation was still the horse and carriage. At first, the public regarded the auto as a toy, a plaything that would never be a feasible way of main transportation. After all, horses were the most reliable by far; they could negotiate footing in any weather and could go very fast if you needed to get somewhere in a hurry.

Opposition to the auto was fierce in some parts of the country. The public scorned motorists (at this time, only the rich) for the unbearable noise that aggravated the motorist’s entire community. The noise of the early automobile often frightened the horses and sometimes caused a wreck. When a person did have the chance to ride in one of these new contraptions, the rumbling, jumpy vibrations, and awful smell immediately convinced most that they were, in fact, “devil wagons” as many called them.

"Fuel"
Major causes of prejudice against motorists were the smell and noise that emitted from autos. What the public did not know was that not all autos were like this, only the gasoline powered ones. Early automakers faced a big decision: they had to decide which type of fuel was the best to power an auto. The gasoline auto’s only good attribute was that it didn’t break down often. When they did break down though, it was virtually impossible to fix them because they were so complicated. In addition, gas autos were very messy for drivers and repairers. Steam autos were much less noisy, had no odor, ran smoothly, and were comparatively easier to fix. They did break down often, however, and that eventually led to their extinction. The electric car was used for a while because it had the same properties of the steam, but instead of breaking down, the electric car simply didn’t last as long because it had to be stopped and recharged. Unfortunately, mostly by default, the gasoline auto won out. This choice made for the slow approval of society and was one of the roots of prejudice toward motorists.

Any of this sounding familiar out there?

I am not sure I understand. My drive changes from as minimal as 12 miles per day to 100 per day depending on where I need to be for work....I have a regular office (the 12 miles) but travel to 9 different locations to complete the majority of my work.

If I drive a car that gets the best possible gas mileage and emits the least amounts of toxins into the air....I am therefore burning less fossil fuels....whether it be for a 12 mile trip or a 100 mile trip How can that not help?

I am guessing your point was the I drive alot of miles but am preaching to save the plannet so I should get a job I can walk to or ride a bicycle to....hey take public transportation......Now that type of statement is preaching in my opinion. I choose to live where I do and work where I do. Everyone should have the same rights.....If I feasibly could find a job that pays the same and I enjoy and would allow me to walk to work etc then I would. I do not have that option at this time. I do not care what anyone does for a living. I really dont care what they choose to drive or how far they choose to drive it. I am mearly suggesting....yes suggesting....not preaching to consider some alternatives.

And getting a tax break? How does taking the tax break hurt the environment?

The whole quote was confusing.

I ended up not buying the Civic. There is not enough room for my Lab., Max, who likes to ride around with me sometimes. I'll keep looking. Anyway I have the ultimate gas mileage ride. My TBA.

Yeah I totally agree with that. It is nothing but a financial and political agenda he is working on. A big majority of the environmental movement (in my opinion) are off base on this stuff as much as the other side that says it doesnt exist.

Truth be know we are probably somewhere in the middle. All the stuff we have done to the planet over the years through manufacturing, energy production etc has harmed the planet. How bad? Who really knows. The scientist are going to cry wolf to prove a point. The eco-wackos join the bandwagon and take off running.....the other side tries to calm fears by saying nothing at all exists.

My choice is to try to do something. If someone chooses to not do anything and buy the big vehicles, not recycle etc. They have every right to do that. I just wish that people would consider all the alternatives. Wishful thinking I know

That's why I was enamored of the Mini Clubwagon because it looks like it might have room for my big girl 3/4 St. Bernard and 1/4 Great Pyrenees...I hate my "soccer mom" van but she really doesn't fit most other vehicles.

Well, what do you expect from someone who has a Lab.

The simple fact is that Golden Retrievers are far more environmentally friendly than Labs.
They don't hardly drool at all.

'Course there is all that hair

Doug Fine! Rich people playing at being green. The privileged Long Islander from Stanford with millionaire relatives. How cute. Other mere mortals have to work for a living to feed their kids. Spending 300k on a 700 square foot house on a green farm in the middle of nowhere just doesn't seem to fit in to our busy schedules. Our trust fund checks are running a bit late this month.

I really like that 30k pick up truck he is driving. Guess he bought that from the goat milk concession.

On the other hand he has gone back to the original Rudolf Diesel fuel of choice (okay, admittedly it's not pure peanut oil but it is veggie and not petroleum).

And, is there really a pickup truck that's under 30K these days that can actually do farm work, "green" or not?

Speaking of Ct. I hear your housing is getting pretty bad.

I am a relocate, I am a reformed Yankee.

I am sorry Mr. Jones. It just makes me crazy how rich people with unlimited money like to show off how green they can be.

I agree, it really parallels the talking heads that churn up the masses by presenting themselves as "just another citizen" and then take their 'car service' home to their palatial estates. It's so easy to set the rest of us on ourselves when they don't have to scramble everyday in order not to fail.

It's actually getting more decent in my neck of the woods (near New Milford, CT), now 900 sq. ft. crapholes go for a mere $200k, anything nice with at least 1000 sq ft will set you back a cool $260k+++, so it's come down a smidgeon (but not much). So, I move to Bridgeport or Waterbury to find affordable, or rent (or get the heck out of Dodge!)....

Wow, I paid $75k for my 972 sq ft craphole back in '99. Might be worth twice that now (if the remodel was done). If the trend continues, "starter homes" like mine should crest $200k in the next few years.

Wait, how did we go from hybrid cars to houses?

A good friend in Encinitas California bought a nice place for about 200k back in 1983 and sold it last year for a little over a million. He got out at the right time. I still kick myself for not buying a place in the San Diego area back in 1977 when I first got there. A decent place was a little over 100K at that time. 3 or 4 times what a similar place was at home. Oh well

I just heard that the average price for a house in Detroit is 22k. Maybe we should all go there

Eeh! Don't worry about that, Larry. You'd have never liked it in SoCal. There's no "change of seasons" out here, ya know.

Nope! Nothing like those "beautiful winters" in Iowa, dude.

You'd have been having to change the oil in your Triumph much more often out here because you would have been able to ride your Triumph all year around in San Diego without freezin' your butt off half the year, which of course would have neccessitated those more frequent oil changes.(not to mention those rather expensive valve adjustments which would have also come along with much more alarming frequency)

Nah. You made the right choice, ol' buddy!

I was stationed at NAS North Island for almost ten years and lived in on-base housing there for eight. It's 34 degrees F and raining here right now and, once again, I'm wondering about the wisdom of moving back, as I have done this time of year for 20 years now.

I have a Prius. It was 26K out the door fully equiped and then I got a 3K credit during tax time so it ended up being 23K. It gets 45 mpg average both city and highway (I have a heavier foot than most:) ALL the hybrid parts have a 10 year warranty...that's including the battery. Has plenty of room to boot. Can't complain. Only thing bad is the rear visibility, that's why it has a rear camera.

I mean, people are actually referring to Rush Limbaugh as some sort of authority

Why not? After all, if Al Gore can be then anyone can.

Who on here said Al Gore is an authority?

Wait a minute, didn't he invent the internet?

Yeah, that's the dude.

Pretty much the whole left wingnut environmentalist wacko movement treats him as if he is their leading light. He's the Pope of Global Warming and the darling of Hollywood, the Kyoto accorders, the UN, the Nobel committee and school teachers everywhere who force defenseless kids to sit through his factless piece of propaganda. Pretty much all those people who excuse outrageous lies in order to support their “greater truth” that is just another lie.

Anyone who repeats his propaganda, accepts his premises and touts his solutions is tacitly accepting his authority on the issue.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

You'd have a vastly different opinion if you actually knew someone involved with the original National Academy of Sciences report.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. Herm Albright (1876 - 1944)

The idea that “Science” is immune to politics and peer pressure is nonsense. There are a great number of weather and climate scientists who dispute the report put out by the government. Unfortunately most of the people who direct grant money and grant tenure are establishment types who enforce “consensus” with an iron hand so there is a lot of pressure to go along or suffer the consequences.

For another view I would recommend “The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming”
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1596985011/junksciencecom

Global Warming, like eugenics a hundred years ago, is widely accepted among politicians and the public and to dispute it is to bring down the wrath of the "in" crowd.

The fact is that the same people who have embraced global cooling, the population bomb, acid rain, the ozone hole and a raft of other scares are now embracing this latest hoax. And their solution is the same as for all the other scares. Bigger government, global authorities, higher taxes, lowered living standards for the non elites and draconian controls of people and economies.
