Once you realize that 3 billion people have rather suddenly gotten access to diesel engines it starts to make sense. The conversion to vehicular travel has really come on like flicking a light switch in China and India and when you see a figure like 3% more intake you have to balance that with their enormous population base. The US is only about 10% as populous as those two countries making a 3% increase by them equivalent to a 30% increase consumption rise for us. It's actually more than a little scary, to be honest.
