After a 6 month experiment with some long slash-cut TORs, I put the stock pipes back on to richen the mixture back up (to see what the plugs may look like after running the stockers again for a while).

I have to say - QUIET PIPES ARE A LUXURY!

I never minded them being quiet before, and yes, the TORs took some getting used to, but other than the popping on decell (which I know is normal), I did not mind the volume of the TORs. I wear earplugs for windnoise anyway when I am going to be on the freeway more than 20 minutes at a stretch. I can't see any value at all though, in any pipes that would be louder than the TORs. I realize that different pipes have different tonal qualities, and we all hear things in a uniquely different way than another person might, too.

But I have to admit that hearing nothing but wind again is real nice. No more angry snarl on acceleration, and no more popping on decelleration. STEALTH MODE.

I lost some top-end, but do appreciate the extra GO that the re-jetting still provides. A lot more GO than before, by going from 120 mains up to 130 mains.

I'll check plug color in a week or so, and see how she looks. She smells richer at idle, especially after cold starts - I never noticed any exhaust smell with the TORs on - because I never got her leaned up enough. It isn't bad now, but I wouldn't want to be in a closed garage with it either way.

I'm not swearing off a more "open" exhaust system by any means, but for now, QUIET is NICE!

I feel the same about my gutted stockers but like Frank says it's about what makes you happy. If you were jetted for those pipes you may need to jet it down a little.

I just got my bike and can't wait to change the pipes. At 55 mph it feels like nothing, just falling through the air. I guess that is a luxery. But I still would like a little noise, I'm reading all the info on here and am now boggled by all the choices. Probebly get TORS and if there not loud enough I'll remove a baffle.
My riding buddy thought the stock pipes were fine.

Zak, The question is: does your friend rides a Triumph as well? cause if he doesn't I'm afraid he is just saying that so you don't get more attention than you already do with your new bike.

This was from the NH Rally, and the dyno
results for a bunch of set-ups are posted.

I went back to stock pipes about 10,000 miles ago and really appreciate the quiet sound. They do get a little louder and deeper with age. I got 48 MPG today on the highway at 75-80 and that's good enough for me.

I'm going back to stock pipes. Fatrat gave me his stock pipes off his 07TBA. I've been running gutted OEM slashcuts with a homade insert that have worked very well but I've some ideas I want to try on the slashcuts to tone them down but keep a mellow note while allowing them to continue to breathe. I guess I'm like that candy commercial from years back. "Sometimes you feel like a nut sometimes you don't." I'll be switching from loud to quiet as the mood strikes. Ya'll take care, you hear!

Its more fun to be ridin'! I'm still ridin

To me even my gutted stock pipes seem quiet. I'm used to my chopper with 10.5:1 pistons and drag pipes. Now that was loud.

I used to collect stock pipes when they went for cheap, then tune them to various duties. I saved one set for quiet. On a 2,800 mile ride back in '06, they were a most welcome addition to the journey.

Hey Snows, my riding buddy does have a Triumph, but not like ours, its 1969 Trophy 650. I'd like to get my BA about as loud as that.
I'm used to my ironhead. It makes noise in all sorts of ways. Its like riding in the middle of a big ball of vibrations. Quieter won't be bad.

Howdy fellow TBA rider. I was wondering if you'd be so kind as to tell me your procedure for "gutting" your stock pipes. I like the look of the america stocks..but want a bit of a "thump". Thanks..snorty.

Welcome to the forum. You can search old threads and get the answers, but I've never had any success using search feature.
First, wiggle the little tube that sticks out the back end til it falls out. Next, use the largest hole saw that will go in end of pipe and drill thru baffle. Next baffles can be knocked out with a long rod and hammer. There are 4 altogether. Do not remove the reducer at the header end of pipe, you will lose low end torque. Take 1 out at a time, ride around after each one. Usually people take out 2 or 3, some remove all 4.

Only had 3 in my pipes but some do have 4. When using the hole saw be sure to use a metal cutting hole saw with plenty of cutting oil. Also use a smaller saw the same size as the center pipe. Put the saw the size of the hole you want to cut on the center with the smaller one at the same time. The smaller saw blade will act as a center to help prevent damage to the outer pipe or mesh that lines the length of the pipe. The rest of the baffles are just spot welded to the mesh and knock out easily. Do Not remove the reducer cone or you will lose bottom end torque. If you have 06 or newer pipes it will have a catalytic converter in it. This is a honeycomb like part and is soft. Do Not try and just beat it out it will just smush up and be a real pain. You need to try and find the pins that hold it in and cut those and then force it out. I've done it but it is not an easy job and would opt for buying an older set to gut instead.

I've been considering whether to go back to a slighly quiter pipe. I may trade my specialty spares for a set of TORS.

So the popping is just part of the fun on decel? Is there anything that can be done to eliminate the popping. Re-jeting did not help? I have installed the TORS on my TBA and I like the sound and even the popping is no big deal as long as I am not messing up the engine

shouldn't pop much but some popping means you have it jetted right. If it is too much try either opening up the pilot screws some or larger pilot jets. Adjust them right don't just go by popping.

In my experience, the TOR's tend to get irritatingly raspy as they age. JMHO.
