I tried, I did try to like it. No seams the black paint looked great, the blacked out engine looked great, I sat on it for about 10 minutes, salsmen saying there has been mixed reaction. I really tried to like, but I have to say if this would of been the tank in 04 when I bought mine, I would of road home the VTX I went into buy when I stumbled over the America. Im not saying its a bad bike im not saying its ugly. But its just a bike now there is nothing to draw your eye to it. Sat on it felt good the new seat is better the chrome even looks better, but nothing draws you to it. They need to do something or our bike will fade into the sunset,we know its more then just a bike.

Ah, but if you had never seen the old tank, would you still have ridden home the VTX instead? I can't say, had the new tank always been the tank, that I would've ridden home that BMW R1150R that I set out to buy. I guess I'm saying it wasn't the tank that originally sold me on the bike. For me it was a bonus.

John I would of, I bought the Triumph because it wowed me. Didnt even know they made them. It was not the same as every other bike. It was the tank that was the draw, It was going to be a Fatboy or a VTX retro, I thought at the time I needed at least 1200ccs. I would of walked right past the America if it was the one I saw today

The old tank has a traditional/historical feel, the new one is like a Yamaha Warrior=boring.

If I remember correctly, Triumph at one time in the 'olden days' came out with a bike which had a tank nobody liked much then, either. Anybody remember that one, or am I thinking of something else?

I can think of several tanks on old Triumphs that I didn't care for.

That just may have proved Chris' point of "They need to do something or our bike will fade into the sunset,we know its more then just a bike."

I got to look at them closely when I took my bike in for BB follow up service (dealer is 45 miles away). The new bikes actually looked somewhat bigger because of the wide tank, but hands down I much prefer the older one. Not only is it more "classic" looking, it also looks great with or without knee pads.

Another draw back is the badges don't swap so that's one more thing you can't easily do to make it "yours". I know what is needed for fuel pump and low fuel sensor and to say it couldn't be fit into a tank with the old shape is BS.

I agree, there is no way it couldnt be made to work, or else one would assume they just arent that good of engineers, but the way the rest of the bikes arent, I dont believe that to be the issue. Its just them being cheap and lazy, and then trying to explain it away as something its not.

Yeah, Triumph had some boo boo's. The one I remember was the first tank on the triple.(sguare and clunky) And there were a couple of full bodied styles in the late 50s that were called the bath tub models. In all instances, dealers had to change the tanks or body panels that Triumph would provide to help the dealers move them. As far as the new tank, I think the first post pretty well sums it up. If it ain't destinctive, why bother? I can get a yamahonda anywhere.

And folks are getting Yamahonda anywhere with liquid, driveshaft, and dealer network. They are paying the same or less for more technology. Check the classifieds our bikes drop like a rock just like Japan Inc. bikes.
The new bikes are fabulous! They finally are into the 21st century for looks. Not like way back like 5 years ago with our hybrid retro bikes that attract only geezers like me.
I love the design!

Maybe so, but the tank would be much better with some sort of knee knock-outs, making it resemble a real Triumph tank. They have them on the bonnie tanks still, much more shallow, but they are still there.

When I had just purchased my BA back in September of 01, I was ravenously searching the web for any and all the information I could find (funny that I didn't find this site until January! ). Anyhoo, I found a theme running through ALL the boards dedicated to Triumph motorcycles. Almost to a man, everyone HATED the new Bonneville America. Some of the thoughts were: abomination travesty loathing detestation I was quite taken aback by all the vitriol being spewed from keyboards everywhere but it did not phase me. I knew I had made the right decision. Almost seven years later, I still have no regrets. My point is, change is inevitable. You can like it or not but these bikes will change or be phased out. AND, all of us that have the older BA/SM models can crab all we want to!

Thats funny since I loved the America when I first saw it but wanted to give it a couple years to be sure they were quality bikes. My friend bought one and he rides hard so I sat back and watched, well rode it too when he first got it and liked it. When I looked at it I saw all the stuff already done to it I would want to do if I bought the std. bonnie or like I used to do to the old bikes. Small rear wheel with big tire, forwards, saddle type seating,etc.... Still stuff to dbut much was done already.

Saw the new tank yesterday, it does make the bike feel bigger due to the width. I do not mind it at all. To me the engine stands out more than the tank does, but that's just me.

The seam has always been a pet peeve of mine. I think it makes bikes look cheap, mass produced.
I like the new tanks, I wish they weren't quite so wide, but overall I think they're an improvement.

I haven't ever minded the seam. Not sure how else to explain it other than it makes it look like a real metal fuel tank.

I see seams all over the Abrams, and it doesnt look the least bit cheap to me. It looks serious and effective.

Saw one this week. Man was it wide, no seams and no flat spots.Guess the next step is how does it feel between the knees?

Mike, I really don't think that Abrams would fit between your knees bud
