I remember reading a story (probably 20 years ago) about two towns of similar size and very similar crime statistics passing new gun laws. The first town was located in New York and they banned all fire arms within the city limits. The second town was located in Texas, and they made it legal for all adult residence to carry (concealed) a gun at all times. The crime rate for the town in NY went up over a 3 year period by more than 200%, while the town in Texas the crime rate went down to almost zero.
Now I don't know if this story was really true, because I don't remember the source, but I always found it to be interesting.
