That's why you put on gaiters and a tool bag. Gaiters protect the lower fork from rock dings, which can scratch your fork seals, and they had a classic look to the bike. My tool bag is ALWAYS on my bike, which covers up the lower tree. It carries essentials like a set of allen wrenches, a leatherman, a tire gauge, extra pair of sunglasses, small LED flashlight, small crescent wrench, cell phone, bungee cord, and a small size container of Altoids(did you know they're "curiously strong"?). So yes, you can have for AND function.
