I've also been riding a long time (started in the dirt, late 60's) and only got onto the streets in the early 80's, but......
How the heck do you get someone's attention? Rev the motor? Kick their door? What about when that idiot you are riding next to decides to drift into your lane? Of course, I do evasive manuevers but I am also on that loud horn too.
What about the moron reading the paper at the light and you are behind them. Rev the motor?
I am not saying I use it all the time but when I need it, it's there and it's loud enough to get everyone's attention.
