In Birmingham we have two very large hospitals that are world leaders in Military Medicine, particularly burns and skeletal re- construction as well a training for military medics. Most of the wounded soldiers brought back from Iraq & Afghanistan or anywhere else usually come straight to Selly Oak until they are well enough to go home.

They come to civilian hospitals because Tony Blair closed most of the military hospitals. At one time, the cheapskate government made no additional provision for them, they were put in wards with the public. Birmingham has a huge muslim population, who in the main are a credit to our city, but as usual amongst them are the idiots. After several incidents when wounded soldiers were verbally abused by some of the muslim visitors, the government told the hospital to open a ward just for them - they didn't pay for it, just told them to do it.

There is an organisation called 'The British Legion' who are supposed to 'look after' servicemen and their families. Any person who has received even one pay check from any armed service qualifies for life membership.

There is also a local group of people, mainly vet's and their families who organise 'Troop Aid' a sort of 'Band Aid' but to raise money to buy the soldiers the little comforts while they are in hospital and even provide help for transport and accommodation for wives and kids to visit.

All they ask is for a venue and entertainers to do their act for free. They take no money and their accounts are freely available for inspection. They do not allow anyone to bring in beer so the club makes a handsome few quid from the evening over the bar.

Now they had one of these benefit nights at the Royal British Legion Club near here (about 3 miles from the hospitals) and raised a lot of money (and spent a lot of money over the bar). One donation from a local restaurant was a cold buffet for a couple of hundred people that was included in the ticket price.

When the trucks turned up to deliver - wait for it - The Royal British Legion turned them away as they said they did their own food and it would ruin their trade if they allowed them to bring it in !

As Secretary of our Social Club, it gives me great pleasure in letting them have our concert room for free and they can bring as much food as they want. I was going to suggest that we made a further donation but they declined, saying that it would be against the spirit of the event and we would soon begin to tire if they had frequent events. This way 'every one's a winner'.

If you do it today you MIGHT regret it. If you CAN'T do it tomorrow you WILL regret it.

Well done...

Reading your post almost made me launch into a tirade about our local American Legion post (which has since closed) and a similar scenario.
They became a social club primarily with little effort expended towards veterans - just showings in holiday parades.

As such, I am letting my membership expire.

Good on ya for doing the right thing.

This seems indicative of the way all Vets seem to be treated. The way I see it, doesn't matter whether you agree with a particular War, If the Government say go, they're gonna go. I'm sure we'd all love a world where nobody wanted to hurt anyone else, but it aint gonna happen in my lifetime. Until that day, we need our armed forces and we should be greatful to those who serve. If they didn't perhaps we'd have National Service back, then what would all the naysayers do.

It's just that attitude of the Legion that stops me joining. I'm grateful that in my 7 years in the RN, I never saw war. I have the deepest respect for those who have!

The UK government does nothing for our vets. The local news recently told of a guy and his family who were going to be evicted from married quarters after being crippled in Iraq and subsequently discharged from the army as unfit. The army hadn't even bothered to contact local authorities to see if they could house the family.

Anyway, Rant over, well done Brummie, shame there aren't more like you

We went to the Wall display this morning. Looked up the OL's brother's plaque and that was the end of the visit. I wanted to take some pictures, but it was better that we left. There were a bunch of brats hanging around and showing little or no respect and Debi didn't want either of us locked up for teaching them better. It seems to be trendy to use the privileges that have been fought for by these folks to abuse them.

I think you may find that despite being a bit of an a***, there were very few military hospitals left for Mr Blair to close down after the previous conservative government had already closed down most of them.

But I do agree that support from the government and a lot of the general public for service personnel in the UK is pretty dire.

Personally I think there are a lot of retired high ranking officers who could be a bit more vocal in support of the troops, after all they rose to their positions off the commitment and loyalty of their subordinates and now they can openly be critical, they appear very mute in the public arena.

And all the while our politicians go on about how proud they are of our armed forces but never actually commit to providing practical support because they have no experience of what serving their country means, they were too self absorbed chasing pound signs to step up to the plate and serve their country and too afraid that they might actually upset elements of our society.
