We have enough corned beef and cabbage and roasted potatoes simmering in a huge pot here in our office. We will treat about two dozen of us to a feast in about fifteen minutes.

No beer though.

If this is/was St Patty's birthday, would you still say "Happy St Patty's day?"

I absolutley refuse to wear anything green today. I am not Irish, I am English. Why oh why do all you Americans go ga ga over some other countries holiday. I do not get it.

I dont see you all falling over yourselves to put on Red and White on St. Georges Day, or Blue and White on St. Andrews day or the Welsh colors on what ever Saint they have.

I dont get it, bunch of bollocks if you ask me. The wife went to work today all decked out in green, she even dressed the children up in green. Something about getting pinched or some other BS if you didnt wear green. Yeah right, come and try and pinch me ya *&^%#$%^&

Bunch of *&^%$ &^%$%& crap.

Bar *&^%#$%&% Humbug

What about all the other countries and all there holidays. Im sure the French have some BS day where they all sit around in their silly berets and eat frogs legs. Lets all walk around in black and white striped shirts with a string of onions hanging around our necks and say (in our finest french accents) Ha Hi Hor Hi Haw to each other.

Bunch of *&^%$#%&^ Bollocks.

well. I think it has something to do with the fact that there are so freaking many of us that hail or are from ancestors who originated from Ireland.

My people arrived (earliest progenitor) somewhat prior to the spud famine that drove the Irish here by the boatloads.

As for the Frogs......(spit) they have no holidays that we much give a rats ****** about here in the states.

My ancestors were named Bourke and the first one was English but he was converted. Sent him to Ireland to keep good order and he bacame more Irish than the Irish themselves. Better lot since then eh?

Sorry.

I think it has to do with 2/3 of the white population of the US being descended from Irish refugees fleeing the potato famine and Brit oppression and land grabbing.

Irony for you....

There is no St Particks Day this year. With it falling in Holy Week, it's cancelled. The Irish celebrated it on Saturday...

Don't believe me, read here.

I don't get it either. They do it in Aussie schools to (and before any Aussie jumps in - I've seen it, this time last year I picked my niece up from school, in Sydney...)
My sis went to the school the previous year and chucked a mental saying that as they won't do St Georges day Emily wasn't gonna do St Patricks day. Emily has a British passport...and both my sis and my bro-in-law are English.
They did.... so last year St Patrick happened for my niece.

And yes I do do things on St Georges Day.

Well, on one hand we had cheap Irish immigrant (among others) labor building our country. On the other hand, Boston Tea Party.

I second that.

Tell you what...I do what I want and it doesn't hurt anyone else when I do it. You do what you want and I'm not gonna b!tch like you just did.

I'm sure you'll say the same thing about cinco de mayo as well.

Today I say cheers with a guiness and an irish car bomb. Cinco de mayo I'll do the same with a corona and a shot of tequila.

Quoted from that link:
"The Catholic Church in England and Wales says St Patrick's Day is simply not on the calendar of feast days this year"

They also said great wealth is a sin. I didn't listen to them about that and I sure as he!! am not going to listen to them about St. Patrick's Day!!

No disrespect, mate but....

I heartily endorse your desire to express and promote your English ethnicity, wherever you happen to live. By the same token, I also would encourage those of us who would express an Irish, Welsh, Cornish, Native American, Spanish, Mexican, Indian, .... or whatever identity, since one's identity is a personal matter of the heart and has nothing whatsoever with citizenship, nationality, place of birth or abode.

Here in Cornwall, we celebrate our Cornish identity on March 5th, St Piran's Day. However, it is an inclusive event and open to all, irrespective of one's citizenship or physical appearance. Similar celebrations are held in such places as California, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Australia, New Zealand and anywhere else there is a thriving community that recognises its Cornish origin.

It is our differences (be it in the UK, the USA, Australia, NZ or wherever) in cultural background that actually add colour to the society in which we happen to reside. The World would be a much duller place if we were all the same.

Whereas the people of the Celtic nations have successfully developed their cultures and subsequently promoted their celtic affinities, the English have failed to promote their Germanic, Anglo-Saxon origins. Could this explain what appears to me to be your somewhat resentful opinion of St Patrick's Day?

Of course, there will always be people such as yourself who identitfy themselves as English and are justifiably proud to do so. It is up to the likes of people like you to get things going and to organise special events on April 23rd, St George's Day, in a manner that enables anyone to participate, just as Irish communities the World over already do.

I, am a proud descendant of Luke Killion( my great-great grandfather, on my father's mother's side ) of County Roscommon. He married, soon after arriving in the USA in Providence, RI, a Mary Leonard, also from Ireland ( I dont know from where ).

On my mom's side, I am a proud descendant of Harold McQuade, who I am told is also from Ireland ( know not where, nor when ), he was my great grandfaher ( on my mom's mom's side ). My grandma told me that they were Scotch Irish( Ulster? ), but she also said the Beard side of the family was Irish too, and upon research, I found that part to be VERY German, and the part of the family that is pre Revolutionary War and served in the Union in the Civil War, they have a neat lineage. I do believe the McQuade's were Irash though, that definitely cant be German. The McQuade side is the only part of the family I havent been able to trace back to Europe ( yet ).

The rest of the family is German ( some from Schleswig-Holstein, other from Posen[now Poznan, Poland]), except for my maternal Grandpa, from Kristianstad,Sweden.

Its interesting what stories have come down through the generations, of the struggles of the Irish to work, the Germans to start their business, how the one couple had to deal with the families not agreeing with marriage and the one being Protestant, the other German, and how they made it. Or how my Swedish grandpa, 17 yrs old, working on a farm with his brother on a farm ( only a few weeks in the country ), they see an animal they have never seen before in Europe, they think it will make a nice hat, so they chase it and kill it. Problem is, it defended itself, and the farmer wouldnt let them near the house, even with out their prize,....it was a skunk.

Our Liberties We Prize and Our Rights We Will Maintain If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and will never be.----Thomas Jefferson
