I don't get it either. They do it in Aussie schools to (and before any Aussie jumps in - I've seen it, this time last year I picked my niece up from school, in Sydney...)
My sis went to the school the previous year and chucked a mental saying that as they won't do St Georges day Emily wasn't gonna do St Patricks day. Emily has a British passport...and both my sis and my bro-in-law are English.
They did.... so last year St Patrick happened for my niece.

And yes I do do things on St Georges Day.
