Your right about hanging generally being a quick death but its has more audience impact. I think that is perhaps why it was in such good use historically worldwide. The French of course used the guillotine for many many years.

I do know that hanging although the method of choice in the old West here in the states sometimes resulted in grisly happenstance when the drop was too much based on the body weight of the hangee. Heads would pop off as a result of the dynamic force of an overly obese hangee hitting the end of the rope. I imagine that sent a gasp of horror through the gallery.
